New with a couple o Questions

I just purchased a kit to practice with and I am wondering..
can somebody please help me name and categorize these picks that I have purchased!

I had found this picture you shared about an hour ago on google, it helped me a lot!
but I am left curious of the others picks,
do you know there names as well

I did my best to ID them for you.. That set is really bad quality by the way, manufacturing quality wise and useful pick design wise. You can try to polish the black pick parts with some sand paper, but they literally might break off while you're doing it. but hey only $12 bucks so..




Get a Southord pick set from Lockpickshop.com or from amazon.com and you'll enjoy it far more than those cheap tools.

I love how you told it like it is with those rakes. I'll also point out that the city rake in that set doesn't quite look right to me. I'm not sure what's off about it though.

I bought that set too when I first started, though for some reason I never got the picks. I've since learned that when it comes to pick sets pretty much anything that costs less than $1/tool is best avoided, especially if it's made in or ships from China. I'm going to have to second Squelchtone on the PSX-14. It's the most popular beginner's set around for a reason.

no, they wont, they'll break before you learn how to use them. and they're not good for newbies, the Southord brand set I linked is good for newbies.

quick question, why do you want to open "a lot of locks"? which/who's locks are you going to be opening?

The best suggestion I can give is to use our SEARCH area, I just typed in youtube lessons and came up with this thread from a couple months ago: viewtopic.php?f=8&t=62007&p=457588&hilit=youtube+lessons#p457572

Poke around the forum and you'll find 99% of the anwers you are looking for.

Also, dont pick your own locks unless you want to break them or break those cheap picks off inside them. It's no fun not being able to lock or unlock your house because you were picking on your own doors. Then you get to take the door locks apart and fix things, tell your wife or parents or landlord what happened and thats no fun either.

get some practice locks from home depot or walmart if you're serious about doing this as a hobby

Rule number two: NEVER pick locks in use. Ever. Never ever ever. Never forever ever. If you break them, break a pick in them, get them stuck in a funny position, etc, you'll be on the next bus to Screwedville. Search the forum, you'll see all kinds of posts from beginners who tried picking the lock on their door and now it no longer works. Get locks from eBay, Amazon, Habitat for Humanity ReStore, padlocks from big box hardware stores, etc. Repeat after me: "I, xDreadwynn, will never pick locks that don't belong to me, or that are in use.". Good.

BTW, Rule number one (at least in my order) is never pick a lock that doesn't belong to you. Violate rule two and you get bent over at home because your lock no longer works. Violate rule one and you get bent over and violated in prison. No bueno.

As far as YouTube, there are zillions. One of my favorites (which I learned about on this forum) is by BosnianBill. Check out his videos.

I got the plastic lock that comes with it, but I never did get the picks. They gave me a full refund and told me to keep what I got so I basically got the lock for free.
