Looking for aftermarket Medeco Keymark Blank

Postby maintenanceguy » 12 Sep 2016 19:00

I'm the facilities manager for a medium sized city school district. We've rented space from a private school that's been closed for a few years. The diocese that owns the property was only able to come up with 2 keys and has no records on the key system and didn't know what we were talking about when we asked for the Medeco card or aluminum tag so we could order more keys. We have permission to cut keys or to just change the locks. There is a barely readable company name stamped on one of the keys but google shows no such locksmith. I'm assuming they're no longer in business.

Cutting keys would be much less expensive than changing locks but we'll change locks if we have too.

The lock cylinders are all Medeco Keymark cylinders. No angled cuts - just regular pin tumbler locks. I know a lot of the older Medeco keys are available aftermarket but I can't find this one.

I realize this sounds like one of those "I'm a high school kid and I want to make a key for my school" posts. If any mods want my contact info, I can provide quick proof that this request for help is legitimate.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Best bet is to swap the cores for another SFIC system.

That's what a kid trying to get a copy of his school key would say

Just kidding. You've been here long enough, we know you, no need to provide further info.

Good luck :)

All of the Keymark stuff is either patented or still restricted from Medeco.

looks like from the research on key patent expiry dates i did a few years ago, original Keymark expired in 2011 ... Keymark X4 doesn't expire until 2027 though.

but even with an expiration date of 2011... i really doubt anyone would bother making keymark blanks... even though we would like that. :-/

i had a thought and just did a google image search... you know I've never seen a key mark with a code card or tag, even new ones.

X4 chrome and KM silver are both carded programs.

Keymark does not use a tag or card. Facilities are under contract with the company and blanks are drop shipped directly to the end user, or the locksmith if they have purchased a keyway. Since the end user has agreed to buy only from the original source there is no "after" market. If you contact the Medeco rep for the area they should be able to help you get this little mess straightened out. If the 'smith is no longer in business Medeco should have arranged for their customers to have another company service the contracts. Keymark blanks will not clamp into a standard key vise, you need to find a key machine with special vises. Hence a company that services this product.
