How to store padlocks

Postby Francescofranz65 » 2 Jul 2016 12:25

Hallo friends, i was wondering wich is the best way to keep padlock, i have a case where i store my padlock and here the question : better store the padlock with the key out or i can leave the key in the padlock? Does the core mechanis with the spring inside suffer or cause no problem even if i dont use the padlock for long time thanks

Personally, I prefer to use key rings and have the key attached to the shackle using the rings.

I would store the lock with the key attached to the shackle with a split ring. Even if the springs take a set, it's still going to function, just with less spring tension. But, why chance it if there is no difference in effort.

More important is keeping them in a dry environment. 100% brass locks aren't affected much by moisture. One of the reasons that brass is/was used on boats is because it doesn't rust. BUT, if brass is in contact with other metals moisture is much more important. Think, brass cylinder in a steel lock body. Galvanic corrosion is evil when it happens. If you've ever dealt with an aluminum seatpost left without lube in a steel bike frame you know what I'm talking about, it may as well be a weld. And lubing locks for storage isn't really an option.

Tie the keys to the shackle. Put them in a sealed box with some silica packs and you're good. For a similar storage situation I go to the local shoe store and grab all the silica packs (the DO NOT EAT packets) I can get my hands on. They give you a weird look, but if you explain it it's usually not a big deal. If they give you attitude just scream "THE 'DO NOT EAT' PACKS END UP IN LANDFILL AND KILL ANIMALS. I'M DISPOSING OF THEM PROPERLY!!!!!"

There are some other options for preventing corrosion that might last a little bit longer than using small silica packets. One can buy really large silica packets that are designed to go into gun safes. An indicator on them turns a certain color when they have absorbed a given amount of moisture, and then they can be restored by putting them in the oven for a certain amount of time.

An old machinist's trick is to get a block of camphor from the (old fashioned) drug store, make a slit in the plastic with a pocket knife, and then put that into their tool chest. The camphor slowly evaporates over a period of months and envelops everything with a very thin rust resistant coating. When the camphor block is gone, put in a new one. From sporting goods stores one can buy packets of cardboard that slowly emit an anti-corrosion vapor to do sort of the same thing (a lot of bearings and auto parts come wrapped in VCI paper for the same purpose)--but the problem is it is hard to tell when they loose effectiveness.

Regarding galvanic corrosion, when two metals of different electronegativity are in an electrolyte solution you basically have a battery and metal atoms will leave one of the metals and attach themselves to the other piece of metal. I think that the parts would have to at least have drops of liquid present, not just high humidity, for that to happen though. For things stored in an unheated area (like a garage), rapid changes of weather from cold to warm during periods of humidity can cause drops of water to form on metallic objects. For things stored inside in a climate controlled room I would not worry too much about it.

Was always taught to store them on keyrings and have the ring attached to the shackle. Dad taught me this from a young age and I never questioned it, just assumed it was correct...

I have had issues with moister in my gun safe in the past, I bought a battery powered dehumidifier and have not had any issues since, I think that would be an excellent choice for storing locks. But have not used it for that purpose

Offer them a service charge to open it LOL.

That's awful, don't do that.

Offer them to duplicate the "trapped" key to get the padlock open!

Cheers

Be like the airline and mortgage industry.

"The padlock is only $5. But if you want the key, that's a $35 extra fee. Oh, and I see you used our convenient parking lot. There's a $9 parking fee. And you came in through the front door. That's a $3 electrical surcharge since you set off the tone that let us know you were here. And a $4 cleaning fee for walking on the carpet. And $2.50 extra for browsing time to offset the cost of us waiting at the counter for you. And the cash register fee. And the printed receipt fee. And the bagging fee. And the recycling fee. And the customer service fee. And the tax processing fee. And the fee for adding up all the other fees ..." You're total comes to $136.50." "But I thought the lock was only $5!?!?" "It is. The remainder of the costs are the fees."
