Hello everyone, I would like to say hi to you wonderful folks and ask a few questions about locks and picking them.
Ok, I'll start with a breif introduction of myself and my new hobby.
Long story short my Gf locked me out of our apartment (accidentally I may add) and once I finally was able to get her awake to open my door after 45 minutes of being in the fridgid cold I decided that I was going to get a pick set.
That was several months ago, and since then my kit (a kit made by a company called Honest) has actually come in handy. I have gotten the hang of raking and single pin picking, and now I am trying to get a feel for security pins.
And thus we come to my question. I have two locks made by Brinks, they seem almost identical save for a few small features. One says made in China on it, and says 40mm on the bottom of the lock. The other looks almost exactly the same, but it doesn't say made in China, it has a patent number on it, the logo is a smaller font, and it is MUCH harder to pick. The China one is crazy easy, I can pick it in about 5 seconds, the other one almost feels like it has a security pin in it, but I'm not sure, does anyone here know about Brinks locks?

Welcome to the Forum, a pic of the locks will help with identifying what model they are. you cant post pic's directly to the forum you need to use a hosting site like imgur or photobucket.

The one on the left is the one I believe is much higher quality. Also the pins in the China one seem quite a bit closer to the opening in the keyhole, and they seem to have quite a large/sloppy gap between the top and bottom pins.

Also, I work in a machine shop, and I got my boss interested in picking, so he said I could have fun picking any padlock I could find laying around during my spare time. Almost all of them are master lock number 3's. I have picked all but 1 of them with much more ease than this Brinks lock.

Do you know if any Brinks locks like those were known to have a security pin in them? It feels like pin no2 is a spool pin.

Some of their laminated padlocks have spools in them, I don't know about yours, but I wouldn't be surprised if the USA made one did.

I believe some Brinks-branded extruded brass padlocks have security pins, however no laminated ones I've run across have them. Some low-quality padlocks have warped or misshapen pins that can mimic security pins, however.

Ah ok, how about this next one I've been having trouble with, it's a master lock number 21 commercial edition with a removable core, I've been trying this one on and off for a week or more with no success.

Ok, one more question, so far I have picked the following locks with relative consistent success.
Trainer lock (super easy, see through, all standard pins.) Brinks China made garbage lock Brinks USA made garbage lock (possible security pin.) About 10 different masterlock #3 locks
Is there a list of progressively more difficult locks that I can purchase and train on? I don't want to spend big bucks yet, just something maybe a little more challenging?

If you use the search function on this forum there are several threads that have exactly that information.
Also, if you check out BosnianBill's website he has a lockpicking 'university' section which also has a step by step progressive difficulty program that is pretty well rounded.
