ASSA / Lockwood Twin Tips Please!

Postby adi_picker » 8 Aug 2016 8:09

Gday Guys,

I have been challenging myself lately, and have finally started to have some success with my Lockwood Twin (Gutting seen here - http://www.lockpicking101.com/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=62617&p=462702#p462702). I have been able to get it to a false set reliably, and can also pick the 3 sidebar pins reliably when false set, but think I am struggling with the tall spool in Pin 2, as seen in the gutting.

Once in false set, everything feels set except Pin 2 which is giving me feedback. I can pull it up and over, and after picking up any dropped pins (frequent), I can pull it back into a false, and pin 2 feels set, but sometimes crunchy, and othertimes a tiny tiny bit springy. I have also noticed that Pin 4 is rigid in this state, but If I lift it AT ALL it oversets, and everything falls. Pin 5 (the other spool) dosent appear to have any feedback and feels set at this time, so Im assuming it is also set.

Once Im in this state, I have proceeded to pick the sidebar several times, and each time I get a few firm clunks, followed by a deeper false set. I have noted the second sidebar pin has false gates, but if in a false gate, the plug would not go into a deeper set.. Would it? This Lockwood has only 3 sidebar pins.

The main things that strike me as odd with this pick, is that Pin 4 remains rigid, and the strange feeling I get from Pin 2. I have never had any problems with spools in the past, but this lock does have some super tight tolerances..

Can somebody please shed some light on what may be happening in this crazy lock? Is there anybody here who really enjoys picking Twins? This definately rates in high security for me, and this pick has made me realise its worth every bit of its inflated price :)

Thanks,

First, have you tried picking the lock without the sidebar installed? This may help to tell where your concern is occurring.

Thanks for the tip Gordon. A really clever way to learn, so obvious, but it never occurred to me.

Once the sidebar was out, It was really easy to recognise that the spool at pin 5 was the cause of my trouble. Being a small spool and behind the deep set pin 4, I had to use a super tall hook to get it set. Once I had that down I reinstalled the sidebar, and hey presto, I got an open!

I think Ill pick it a few more times with this current bitting, get someone to scramble the pins for me, and start all over without the inside knowledge.

Thanks again, you got me over the hump.

Slightly different than the Lockwood - five sidebar pins rather than three - but this is probably the cheapest and most reliable US seller of the ASSA Twin.

One word of warning, if planning to use as a practice lock: the one I purchased was mastered; pull the master wafers and re-pin to make it more of a challenge.

I wanted to add a lockwood padlock to my collection.
