Where am I going wrong?

Postby TorontoGuy » 2 Oct 2016 0:03

Even as a rank beginner, I have had some success in raking open the usual standard pinned Master locks (#1, #3, M1, 160, M175, and even the M930). My SPPing is still haphazard and random but, I am practicing and hope to improve.
Where my frustration lies is in an area that I was not expecting. Warded locks.
I have the Sparrows warded pick set and I assumed that they would not present much of a problem...but...I have had no luck at all.
I have the Master 500D and a Master 8596D and neither of them will open with the picks. The 500D using the picks allow me to feel the latch spring and even to turn the pick completely but the latch doesn't open. I can feel it partially click and, when I remove the pick, the shackle snaps back to the fully locked position. The 8596D doesn't even give me that much.
This shouldn't be this difficult so...where am I going wrong?

Sounds like it has two latch springs. Also, the spring is not always at the very back of the keyhole. Try other locations.

Also, is there a wider warded pick you can use? It is possible to engage the right parts of the lock without moving them far enough to release the shackle.

Pretty sure the 500D is a single latch .. at the bottom of the key way .. Refer to link for 8596D

Yes, this sounds exactly like my situation. I can feel the wire or spring in the lock and it is under tension as I turn the pick. Actually, the tension is sufficient to hold the pick in the lock when i remove my hand.
The width of the pick is identical to the width of the key...not as thick as the key of course.
In the end, it feels like the pick does move the locking spring a bit but, as you say, the shackle does not release.

i'll keep tryinh. Thanks for the suggestions.
