Really in need of help, impossible lock

Postby Balleduk » 7 Oct 2016 21:21

Hey!

ive been lockpicking for a few days, just bought a nice set and the sparrow traing locks, with increasing from 2 to 5 regular pinned locks with 4 different locks. I could easly pick the 2 pinned, 3 and pinned in some hours regurly and fast, but for days now ive been stuck on the 5 pinned regular tumblr lock. i can not get it open with control, i can set the first and second pin, but then i cant feel any other. do you guys have any suggestions? also, is picking a 5 pinned regural lock easy? and does it become alot harder with security pins when i meet those? thanks for all the help i can get, you are really helping me out! :)

I am a little confused by the terminology .. Are you trying to pick a lock to control.. Because that can be difficult for an experience lock picker with the correct tools .. If that is the case you might want to back up and try a simpler lock ..maybe posting a pic of the lock would help ..

Depends on the lock .. and Not necessarily harder but a different feeling and process..
When I finally leave this world.. Will someone please tell my wife what I have REALLY spent on locks ...

I would say to do some reading .. They are a bunch of great books out there that explain the process..

https://www.amazon.com/Practical-Lock-Picking-Second-Penetration/dp/1597499897.. this book is pretty good..

The is full of read tutorials about the subject ..

Look at this guys videos .. BosnianBill on YouTube.. He has some good videos... https://lock-lab.com/

And Practice, Practice, Practice ..

Jump back to only a couple pins in the lock and feel and listen to what is happening when you set the pins.. Lock Picking is just as much a senses thing as it is a mechanical thing..

Remember it is not a sprint .. Slower is better..

OK, the thread is two month, old but I want to give to some tip though. Progressive picking is great for getting used to the picking subject as such and you will have some immediate success. With every additional pin added, the binding order change and the locks behaves differently. You have an increased complexity regarding binding order, tension control, oversetting. First of all it's desirable to be able to determine / guess the state of a pin stack at every time in the picking process: Springy, set, overset, partially set. This is a matter of training, intuition and luck ;-) If the keyway is wide open, the bitting is not crazy and you use a thick pick than it's easily achievable with standard pins. So now carefully observe how the pin-binding-state changes when applying tension to the plug and find the first binder. Pick and search again,... maybe you overset a pin but you should be able to detect that. Then try with more tension next time, or try with very light tension and set the pins not all the way at once. There are numerous possibilities but the main thing remains the same, try to learn to feel the pin/lock state to make correct decision of your next step. If a method doesn't work, try something different. It's a about the fun of experimenting and learning. You should have fun doing this. For me picking is nothing that I could learn and just do after I have learned it. It's a continuous process of try / error and learning.
Hope this helps. Bye,
Michael

Less talented, but patient and persevering.
