I still think that there should be part of that roll pin in the shackle sticking out, and someone destroyed that part. When the lock is originally assembled, the shackle is put into the body, and the roll pin is installed through that hole where the slider fits. It allows the shackle to move up and down, but not be removed.

The shackle is not normally removed when the lock is serviced, unless it has been cut.

Can we get a picture of the sides of the shackle where that pin fits? You/we may be able to see the modification/damage.

Darski wrote:Thanks for the response. I'm afraid that I didn't take a very good photo of the bottom of the shackle. Unless I misunderstand you, there's a pin present in the cutout at the bottom of the shackle. It's pretty rusty but it's intact.

Yes, that is the pin. It should be sticking out to the side and that stops the shackle from coming out. As I said, yours is sheared off flush with the shackle.

mseifert wrote:I am not an expert here but I seem to recall there being a sequence of key and shackle turn necessary to remove the Shackle..

1- Something is misaligned/missing
2- The part that catches the pin is broken not allowing the shackle to stay retained.

Did you remove the shackle or has it always been that way since you came into possession of the lock. ??

Only thing I can find is this .. and I am not even sure it is for a 831B

The information sheet (which is better than I've seen before) looks pretty similar but it also looks like there's a couple differences from this lock model. The lock has been this way since I bought it (photos didn't reveal the problem). The seller found it and doesn't know much about locks or this one's history. He was apparently unaware that the disconnected shackle was unusual.

The lock has two keys, the operator's key and the control key. I'd understand if the shackle fell out after using the control key and the gate (I think that's what it's called) falls out but the shackle falls out no matter which key is used or what position the gate is in.

That is for the 826 series of padlock.

It was indeed installed backwards. The point comes out and basically lightly "ejects" that part once you open the lock to control.I think OP is missing the spring that goes there though.

Darski wrote:The reassembled disassembly plate:

Despite the fix, I think the shackle is too short to be affected by the spring-loaded pin because for the shackle to turn, the very bottom of it is beyond the reach of the spring-loaded pin.

Thanks for all the input.

Ok, this is REALLY simple. Put the shackle in but have the shorter part of the shackle OUTSIDE the lock body. Just like in your pictures but move the shackle more to the left and then slide it down. This will allow you to see the hole in the shackle where the roll pin goes. Just like in this picture, but I am using a different lock. The steel pin pushes on the shackle when the lock is CLOSED. Thus the shackle is much farther in then your picture.

You would be 100% correct. As I said in the first post, that pin has been sheared off. OP needs to remove it and install a new one. Unfortunately I sold my 831 so I cant take a picture but have a picture of an 833 shackle. You can see the pin sticking out the bottom that keeps the shackle in place.

Do my eyes deceive me, or do I see that your lock has a non-original Abloy KIK cylinder, AverageJoe? Sweeeet!

Yes, I modified an Abloy Protec KIK with open/close keys to work as operating and control only keys that stop in the right place and don't over turn ;)

Thanks.

I see some slots in the shackle silo (for ignorance of another term : ) in which the aforementioned pin could slide.

I think I'll try a wooden pin first so I don't do something that I can't easily reverse.

I'll keep you posted.
