Questions about Learning Strategy

Postby Balleduk » 20 Oct 2016 8:50

Hello, and thank you all for a fantastic and helpfull forum!
Ive have some questions which i would really appreciate all the info i can get :)

First one being, how many locks do you guys recommend i should have? i have a feeling as many as possibly to progress the fastest. so should i invest in buying more locks, or should i buy a big repin kit so i can change the pins. i like investing in hobbies i like, so i dont mind spending much money.

Also are the pins standard size? i currently live in norway, so which size is normal here?

Do you guys also recommend a kit thats good?

Thanks again for all the help!

I would go for Different types of locks so you get more experience. That is the approach that I am trying at least.

I am also from Norway :) I wil gladly discuss locks we can get our hands on here in moderlandet ;)

I have a very wide variety of locks.. From Basic 4pin standard pin to High Security.. I am always on the look out for inexpensive locks to add to my collection as well as a new feature to pick my way around

So, I have some locks that are just sitting on the shelf waiting for me to advance enough to make an attempt at them .. If you are truly just starting out then these.. IF you have access to them in Norway, the ones listed in this video are good one to have around

As far as pins .. They vary by manufacture..
When I finally leave this world.. Will someone please tell my wife what I have REALLY spent on locks ...

Balleduk,
When I was first starting out I did go the a local store and buy a couple of different padlocks to practice on. After I had gotten the hang of things I ended up contacting a local locksmith. I explained that I was learning to pick and asked if he had any old cores I could have to practice on. He ended up giving me a giant box of all sorts of different cores and locks. If there are any around the area, it's definitely worth checking into!

I totally have a full box of used locks and I hate tossing them in the trash, but even the brass bin can
only hold just so much potmetal, before the recycler guy notices it ain't all brass :P

I'd say locks. Even if you rekey a lock, the order of picking is going to be roughly the same, since that's determined by shell/cylinder tolerance issues, not (so much) the pinning.
