I have impressioned a key and the plug rotates but the lock doesn't open. What is happening?

Depends on a lot of factors. Which lock (model, mfg, padlock, mortise)? Have you confirmed its operation? How far does the plug rotate? Does it turn freely, or feel like it's dragging?

Sometimes the plug will begin to turn before all depths are fully cut, then bind against the shell. This may be the case here; are you seeing any deep crater marks on the key?

It is a Facto Bola entry lock about 6 months old. The plug rotates about 90 degrees but does not unlock. The plug turns freely and no marks are showing on the key. The blank was showing marks while impressioning but now there is nothing.

Are you trying 90 degrees in the opposite direction as well?

No pictures as of yet because my blackberry camera decided to stop working. I must say I was so focused on a cw rotation I didn't even try counter cw. I will give it a try and get back to you.

I hate to admit it but after impressioning schlage locks for the past several months I developed the mindset that the lock should open clockwise. Upon trying the lock again, only this time turning counter clockwise, I was successful in making a working key.

Thanks to those who gave advise and sorry for being such a rookie lol.
