No joke that's the name on the safe. There is no name on the lock just 12 digits. I have found no information about this lock...is it even real? I'll post a PiC as soon as I can. Hopefully someone can help.

Once you've posted a couple pictures somebody may be able to help you identify the safe.

You need help in opening? Restoring? Knowing how it works?

Cheers :)

and in the meantime I'll move this post from What Lock Should I Buy to This Old Safe... I often wonder why people post their questions in the areas they do... are the current categories that difficult to read?

From reading this article http://en.allexperts.com/q/Antique-Safe ... k-safe.htm it sounds like you have a Safe Cabinet Co. safe made from 1906-1909.

Here is a photo from a google search. I guess the model was called "The Dick" as in "The Richard".. before dick meant what it means these days.. gotta love old marketing.

In the photo of Squelchtone's Dick it appears to have the 50 numbered, removable dial. The dial may have been doctored /replaced with a homemade number 12 dial but if it is an original 12 dial then I will say that I had never seen one before. Nice find, Shua13.

Years ago dick was slang for detective or guard. As in the "hotel dick" in hard boiled detective stories. In 1940 W.C. Fields played "the bank dick" in the movie of the same title, where he was a plain clothes bank guard. In that context it would have made some marketing sense.

But not for your OP stating the safe as a Dick, I would have thought the safe was a National only because of the dial/handle placement as your latest pic shows. Also, please submit full frontal pic of your safe.

Better pictures would help. The current one looks like a knob...but we can't be entirely sure without more detail.

...This is too entertaining. I knew it wouldn't take long for this thread to go off the rails.

And a large black one at that. Where as the OP seams to have one more of the style of a woodie.

I do like the 12 number dial though.
You call that a safe? Let me show you a real safe...
