RV lock

Thinking of upgrading your door security? Getting a better deadbolt or padlock? Getting a new frame or better hinges? Not sure what brand or model to go with for your particular application? Need a recommendation? Feel free to ask for advice here!

RV lock

Hello,

I have a camper (a travel trailer) and have read that some manufacturers have used essentially the same key on many trailers for multiple years. Not sure how widespread this may be, but the solution recommended there was a very expensive replacement lock.

I don't need something ridiculous, it's a camper, so there are other vulnerabilities to a sufficiently determined thief.

My question is: what might you recommend as a reasonably priced, reliable upgrade that someone mechanically inclined could install?

Take some pictures of the existing lock (the more the better) and give us an idea of your budget. We'll give you a solution.

Having trouble getting the image address to post here, the album should be http://m.imgur.com/a/ZBKV5

I believe it is a standard rv lock, probably a wafer from what.little I know. The door lock is the primary concern. I would love to upgrade it and possibly replace the 3 round compartment locks for under 150, but i don't know how realistic it is to expect quality at that price point.

There is a difference between cheap and inexpensive. I would prefer the latter while avoiding the former if possible.

AFAIK the Trimark door lock is what it is, you are stuck with it. No security upgrades that I know of. You could get creative and install a padlock and hasp over the key hole of the trailer lock. Don't install a hasp to lock the door, that would be dangerous, but what you are doing is installing it over the top of the existing lock to block access to it. So basically you would lock your deadbolt as usual when you leave and then flip the hasp over the top and insert a puck lock over the top.

The little cam locks on the compartments you can upgrade to a more secure lock, the least expensive solution would be to use a pin tumbler universal mailbox lock. Not high security but more secure than a disc tumbler lock.

Olympus padlock Co makes a cam lock that is padlockable, or National padlock co made cam locks that were pin tumbler, either can be installed in the holes that currently exist in your doors.

I hope you know that door is likely the thinnest sheet metal available, wrapped around a piece of styrofoam?
Anyone who wants in your door(s) can open them with a few kicks, so why bother spending money on the outside
of the vehicle? You could be better off with a safe inside the motorhome

I've used these and they are good quality and you can set any number to the combination you want.

Despite the doors being little more than Styrofoam I would think if you really wanted to you may be able to make enough modifications to install a mortise lockset or an external deadbolt similar to http://www.midlandhardware.com/181099.html?gclid=CJ36oOPfltACFUxbhgodoQwNhw on the inside of the door and mount the latching box in the inside wall where the door closes.

Again, it would take some modification and lots of extra work but I'm sure there's a way to get it installed.
It still wouldn't make the door any less susceptible to someone just bending it until the lock doesn't apply to the equation of door = open.
