How to dial the combination on an S&G 6730

Postby ltdbjd » 16 Nov 2016 19:13

Forgive me if this has already been addressed in another thread. After I got through the first 5 of 25 pages of posts when I searched for how to dial a combination, I kind of gave up.

I just gave a cheat sheet I made in Word to somebody here at work who was having troubles dialing the combination. He finally gave up and called me to help him. I figured I'd share it. I've seen a lot of different ways to explain how to do it, but this is something I put together. I tried to use the word (eg "first number") when talking about the combination number, and the number (eg "2 times, stop the 3rd time"). I mentioned the lever in the notes at the bottom because we mostly have Fire King drawers that don't have levers. I wouldn't mind superimposing the dial and arrows in the S&G manual into this, but I haven't gotten around to messing with it.

If anybody else has a cheat sheet (and it's not already in another thread), perhaps you can share it here.

SAFE OPENING INSTRUCTIONS

Rotate dial at least 4 times to the right to clear it (where you start and stop doesn’t matter)

Turn the dial to the left, passing the first number of the combination 3 times, and stop the 4th time you get to your first number of your combination.

Turn the dial to the right, passing the second number of the combination 2 times, and stop the 3rd time you get to the second number of the combination.

Turn the dial to the left, passing the third number of your combination 1 time, and stop the 2nd time you get to the third number of your combination.

Turn the dial back to the right until it comes to a stop. If it turns to around 70 without stopping, there was an error with the combination and you’ll need to start over.

NOTES:
You need to stop on the number exactly. There is very little room for error. If you pass a number, you can’t turn back to it. You’ll have to start over

When closing the safe, close the door, turn the lever (if you have one) to the locked position, and turn the dial to the left a few times (you won’t be able to turn it to the right).

The first paragraph about dialing right to clear it is not really needed. the simple act of dialing the first number picks up all the wheels in the same direction and that does a fine job of clearing it.

Im honestly surprised you didnt find a post about dialing, I know some other posts in This Old Safe have some hotly debated posts where folks including myself argued the best wording to use that was universally understandable by every idiot dialing a safe. I'll see if I can dig it up.

You don't need to go to the effort of looking it up. I was at work where I have the instructions on my computer, and couldn't get through all 25 pages that came up. I went through the first 5 pages and hoped that the search results came back with the most relevant posts first.

I can go through all of them tonight at home; but then I wouldn't have the document. To answer the burning question about why I didn't just email it from home, e-mails from work are public record, so they frown on personal use (for some reason Hillary Clinton comes to mind), and they don't permit thumb drives in state computers.

I just call it the 4321
4 turns left to the first #
3 turns right to the second #
2 turns left to the third #
1 turn right till dial stop

Unfortunately some of my clients were unable to tell when the dial stopped without the appearance of dial twistage
for these folks I give the actual # where the dial stops for the '1 turn right to # xx line

I got the rough dialing sequence on the back of my business card and just fill in the blanks when I change a combo:

Turn Dial __ __ Times To __
Turn Dial __ __ Times To __
Turn Dial __ __ Times To __
Turn Dial __ __ Times To __
