What to look for in a rekeyable practice lock

Postby iwannapretzel » 20 Nov 2016 17:47

I know the FAQ says to just search ebay, but is there anything I should be looking for in such a lock? obviously there are a lot of different unbranded options on ebay and I wouldn't want to buy something trashy. I know sparrows sells some as well, are there any actual brands anyone would want to recommend or is it not worth the extra $? Also, I've noticed many (sparrows, for instance) use a schlage keyway- I've heard many that advise avoiding this as a beginner as the warding is more difficult. should I be looking for a kwikset keyway instead?

here is sparrow's page: http://www.sparrowslockpicks.com/category_s/85.htm
and here is one lock I was looking at on ebay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/7-Pin-Pin-Your- ... Sw41xXO2Et

also, lots consisting of no-name 2 pin, 3 pin, 4 pin, etc locks seem to be abundant in the search results of "practice lock" on ebay. would it be more economical to go with these? I understand that I couldn't pin for different bitting or throw in some security pins as I progress, which seems like it would kind of defeat the point of going out of my way/spending extra $ for a practice lock...

Funny enough that ebay seller is a town away from me but it's not Mr Wizard.

Didnt jimu57 also have practice locks for sale?

BosnianBill's latest review is of Sparrows new "Reload Kit' which essentially turns their progressive practice lock set into fully rekeyable locks. It includes most everything you would need including security pins (spools, serrated and mushrooms), follower, springs, pinning trays, even already cut keys.
The price is good and I have already ordered one for myself which should arrive on Tuesday.
