Abus 83 comes with core or what?

Postby Balleduk » 25 Nov 2016 10:25

Howdy all!

Does anyone of you fine fellows know if the abus 83/55 comes with a core, and what core? The 80mm dosent come with core standard that i know. But the 55mm model sometimes it stands carded in the ad, other times it stands keyed.

Have a great day everbody!

The Abus locks I've bought have come with an Abus core (schlage C keyway, initially with 5 pins) that is 0 bitted, and a 0 bitted key. There's a top spool/spring and a small cover plate that comes in a small plastic bag with the lock. The SFIC model (83CS IC/55) don't come with a core. LFIC models also have no core. The 83/80 came with a 0 bitted Schlage C keyway core.

Hope this helps!

It's available in a large number of keyways. Here's a link to the ABUS padlock catalog.

If you didn't specify with the 83/55 and you are in the US you will get the 300 model which is 1145/1145A. With the other more commonly available 83/45 you will choose from the keyways by adding the suffix, 100, 200, 300 etc. In theory you could order the 83/55 less cylinder or with a different keyway but I haven't used a supplier that stocks it that way. ABUS offers a lot of options that would basically be a factory order.

My suppliers don't even offer the 83/55 in any other keyway. Would love to have a choice.

What does the SFIC stands for? going to order from ebay, would be one heck of a dummer to get a lock without core as a lockpicker

If you're just starting out picking, you don't want an interchangeable core. They are fairly advanced as they have 2 shear lines, an operating shear line, and a control shear line. Picking to the control doesn't unlock it, it just removes the core from the housing.

I've never ordered an IC, the 83/45's comes with a core. You specify the keyway when you order. If you're still having doubts, you can call ABUS. They're helpful. I've called a few times with questions about the weather resistant padlocks, and the SC C-L.

They also have an adapter which allows you to use your own KIK's in them.

If it is a new lock then it would come without a core. SFIC locks are that way and you simply add the SFIC of your choosing. A secondhand one would probably have a core. Why not ask the seller?

Carded sounds like they might be Medeco Keymark or similar SFIC that requires a card to buy keys.

Here's what ABUS says:

Good to know: The most important differences when it comes to keys

Conventional keys and reversible keys, code numbers and owner protection cards, technical and legal copy protection. The differences aren’t always clear. Here we will explain them to you.

Code Number vs. Owner Protection Card
If the cylinder is equipped with a key that has a code number, the code is located on the key or on the card delivered along with it. In the case that you need a replacement key, your specialized retailer will create a new one using this code number. This ensures the consistent quality of all keys. Your key will always be created as an original and is not just a copy.

The code card also has the advantage that your key doesn’t leave your possession. You simply give the specialist your code card and then he will create a replacement key for you.

It is not possible to tell how many keys have been created using the code. There is no registration.

Owner protection cards guarantee the highest level of security. They are created for patented door cylinders. Only the person who possesses the owner protection card and can present it at a specialized retailer will receive a replacement key. That way you have peace of mind, knowing that an unauthorized person is not having your key copied and gaining access to your house or property.
