Lost Key to lock!

Postby Unicorn0578 » 27 Nov 2016 10:16

Hello, I am new to your forum and wondered if you could help me.
I'm looking for the cheapest solution to open a storage door at work as the key is lost.
I was off work for a few weeks and when I came back one of 3 keys went missing off a key ring and I cant find it anywhere!
Guess what's stored in the cupboard????? 2 x Christmas Tree's and all the decorations and lights.
The image below is of another cupboard lock I do have the key for so assume the lock will be exactly the same type.
Any ideas appreciated.
I did try searching for EREBUS but nothing came up :?

It would help a lot more to see the face of your lock cylinder (the one that is locked, not the one younhave keys for) including a good well lit (no cell phone flash photo) of the keyway.. if you dont mind posting a pic of one of the other keys that would be great. To confirm they are the same lock model, can you insert the wrong keys into the lock cylinder that you are missing keys for? Do the other keys slide into that cylinder all the way?

Also, what state/region/country are you located in? If you are UK, and your keys are not lever, then your key is probably a Yale Y1

Cheapest thing to do is try every employee's keys to see if they happen to match the cabinet, or try a master key if the office manager or landlord has one for your offices, good chance the cupboards will be on the same master key system.

Thanks for the additional pic,

Thanks for your speedy reply.
Luckily I live on site and so could get more photos easily.
Yes, I am in the UK.
The wrong keys insert and part turn.
I have 3 cupboards and 2 keys
The office manager is....ahem ... me
I took one of the locks apart and it looks a fairly basic lock
Below are more photo's for your perusal and thanks

Ok, lever locks are not my realm, but look in our European locks and picks section for a sticky on making "wires" or a "2-in-1" tool to pick the lock. You may find some wires lever lock picking videos on youtube as well

Our UK members will be able to give you better advice as well as a quote for how much it would be to come out and pick that lock.

Edit: here is a sample video there are many many more.

Here is a picture of what you need to pick a non curtian mortice lock. I find making a wire to suit the bolt first, works best. Take one of the spare locks you have. Then make up a wire that fits into the "V" shaped notch in the bolt, and practice moving it back and forth without the levers in.

Once youve done that, put the levers back in, and you will see how they interact with the bolt, and how they must be lifted.

Make your second wire so you can lift up the levers.

Put pressure on the bolt tensioning wire, then lift up the levers one by one. After practise you will find the ones that "bind" as they each obstruct the bolt from moving back.

Once youve lifted all three levers to the correct height, and they click into the gates, you should have your first open.

Good luck.

I also use my thumb as a fulcrum point for the tools, but you can use bottom of the keyway,(as above video) or knock in a small wooden wedge into the keyway too.
