Old Dexter KIK

Having been given an old doorknob with no key I set to disassembling it so I could play with the KIK cylinder and see if I can get it picked.
I found a key that fit in the keyway which was an Axxess 70 and a quick google search gave me a list of what Axxess number keys go to which manufacture of locks. Using that information it was determined that this is a Dexter lock.
I'm having an issue with it; even though the tolerances seem lower than average it acts like it has some spools in it. (I don't want to take the top cap off until I pick it)
The binding pins are easy to determine, but after a couple binders are set I get a slight false set.
When I set the next one, everything else drops back. Obviously I go back and set the next binder again and get another false set.
This time when I set the next one every one of the previously set pins reset.
I've tried with heavy tension, light tension, adjusting tension to set what seems like a spool and it works out, resetting the other set pins.
Spool number two sets, but also resets all of the other pins including spool number one.
Setting spool number one again resets spool number two and I get the feeling of pushing a rock up a hill...

I've also tried tensioning counter clockwise and it's the same results, just in the opposite direction

I do think I'll have to rake it or bump it to win but I wanted to share this strange experience and ask:
Do Dexter locks seem to be more difficult than average? This is the first one I've come across so there's nothing I can compare it to.

I believe Dexter is the brand that Schlage makes for the Canadian market. So it's gonna pick like a Schlge with spools, which can be tricky sometimes. Is your lock an SC1 profile?

Years ago Schlage bought out Dexter,
An actual Dexter lock can be hard to pick, I recall impressioning a key to a Dexter deadbolt lock, after my Dad told me to quit drilling them out
Dexter made a cheaper product than Schlage did, but they had a fairly tight tolerance, much like Schlage used to

actually - Master bought Dexter in 1986, they sold it in 1998.
We have some MD17 blanks at the hardware store "Master Dexter" and still cut a fair number of DE6 and DE8 keys.
