I wish I got into lock picking when I was in the navy, because the broken key extractor would have save my lockers, containing ordinance mind you, from being cut open with a torch. I was never near the locker when they cut it open. Cutting torch + ordinance = me taking a smoke break far away.

Sounds like you have some good sense! Yes, the ordinance should be securely stored inside the locker, but what if someone was in a hurry to get to the chow hall.

I don't mean you! Safety comes first. But some people may not have priorities straight. And if they did not do the job right in that particular instance, would much rather be far away when the torch starts cutting.

Does anyone know the production figures for the S&G padlocks 831, 833, 951? I tried goggling it and didn't find anything. Also since you are reading this do you know the production years for these locks?

S&G is unlikely to release how many units they made, but if you think of who their main customer is you can follow the trail that way. I once came across some defense logistics agency or maybe it was the Navy orders wanting x amount of 833 padlocks for the gulf war, it was some crazy amount like 90,000 but I would have to dig it up to be sure. Someone wrote a paper about us military padlocks and in it they talk about different stampings meaning the lock.bodies and how many 831 padlocks were made and where. Thats as close as we can come to knowing how many of each lock are out there. I'll try to dig up my old research.

This 1992/1993 pdf page 38 http://www.gao.gov/assets/160/153541.pdf lists how much money the govt had tied up in 833 padlock inventory under NSN number 5340-01-217-5068
It's $8,910,680 in padlocks, divide that by how much the govt paid per padlock (who knows what that price was compared to the retail price) and you get an idea of how many were bought by the govt who was to my best guess the only customer at that time, so that translates to number of units made.

I'd like to think most orders are placed using rounded off numbers, so let's pretend they ordered 10,000 833 padlocks from S&G, then the govt cost was $891 /padlock which seems like a reasonable price. or if they ordered 7,500 padlocks, the price would be $1,188.00 which is very close to the $1200 dollar price they tend to sell for brand new. Again, I'm just guessing here with some fast and loose math.
