my journey into pick making - how to get better over time

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

AsDIY HOMEMADE PICKSET TUTORIAL

I am issuing a tutorial sequence of methodology I used to produce my own custom pickset.
What follows are some photos showing some of my products, of varying qualities as it shows the progression of my exploration INTO the field

PROJECT STEP ONE --

MATERIALS

1/8th of an inch heat shrink tubing
(10x 1meter long pieces £1.19)

Wire cutters/ Snips
(Even the ones out of one of the pound shops will do)

Street sweeper bristles

Small set of diamond files hand files
(£4 for 4-pack)

Sandpaper/ Emery blocks
(Again, another score for the pound shops, guys...,)

PREFERABLE BUT NOT ESSENTIAL;

Bench grinder

Dremel tool and accessories.

Reason: TITLE EDIT: changed so it doesn't sound like a DIY tutorial written by a seasoned expert for all beginners.

I think you manually added .jpg to the end of your imgur album links in order to use the [image] command, but Imgur names gallery folders and individual pictures with a different random name so just putting .jpg on an album name doesnt show it in the forum.. right click the picture and choose View or Show or Display image, then copy *that* link which will already have .jpg at the end of it.

Or just link to your album as a regular link and we can always just click it open and see the pics inside.

I removed the line break after jpg and the images showed up.
The url must be inside the image tag, without spaces and line breaks.

No offence, but these are among the most crude picks I've seen. I guess they're not finished yet. You still need to sand those, right?

Cheers :)

I thought the same thing Femurat, but I noticed

And I do believe he is displaying where he started and would guess there's more to come.

I had HOPED my intentions, aims and purpose behind this still-in-progress series of offerings was to
a)document my OWN journey into locksport and
b) to signpost a realistic and honest representation of the level, speed and amount of improvement and progression a fellow new initiate into the field, one that they could compare THEIR attempts with in order to grade or quantify their own learning curves

It can be daunting and disheartening as hell when you're new and struggling to learn and progress, to have veterans' work shaming your own, and to have helpful and encouraging asides plastered to your work BY those veterans...('...weeeeellll, THOSE are rough as hell....'prime example)

well, when the thread is named "DIY Pickset Tutorial 1" that makes it sounds like you are an authority on how others should make their DIY picks.. perhaps we should call the thread my journey into pick making and how I got better over time. or "how my pick making got better over time a primer for others starting out"

just some suggestions, not meant to offend.

I have never seen anyone on the forum intentionally offend someone. Don't let it get you down, we have to keep in mind that everything here is written text and there will be misinterpretations and one cannot convey voice inflection in text.
A sentence gets overlooked here or there and misunderstandings happen. Squelchtone has a point in that the thread title was misleading.
Take no offense, I've found that everyone here is helpful and honest.

Man, I'm sorry if you got offended by my comment. As Squelchtone said, the title made me see this as a tutorial. That's why I said the picks are crude. I also guessed you still had to finish them with sandpaper.
That was intended as constructive criticism.
I do believe that your picks could be finished with some sandpaper and become good looking picks.

Let me show you my first set so you can see my crude picks
