Made my 1st homebrew pick!

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

Made my 1st homebrew pick!

Postby OrMeanGene » 24 Dec 2016 1:14

My wife got me a bench grinder for Christmas and having no patience i made my 1st pick... I used a wider wiper blade i harvested. I used grinder for most, touched up slightly with dremel and sanded. Went 400, 800, 1000,1500 grit sanding. In all honestly i hurried it a bit just to test. Got nice shine on it, and threw on shrink tube. I will be putting more time in normally and use various handle material. If theres an experienced person that notices something i could do better, feel free to point out. Thanks

A wet grinder? Great choice. How long took grinding it?
The pick is a beauty. I could have made it. Well, except for the handle. Shrinking tube is quick and easy, but I prefer something bigger. This is the only thing I think you can improve.
Are you sure this is your first pick?

Cheers :)

Yup 1st. Thanks. Just a regular Wen grinder. I did keep cup of water to keep cool. Less then 10mins to grind. Got 6" wheels 60grit and 36grit. Im with you on handles. Im gonna do stabilized wood handles with nice design. Just testing waters.

You work fast!

Why the cup of water? The wet grinder shouldn't heat the pick. Isn't the disk wet? Now I'm curious to see your model. I'm also curious to see the wooden handles you'll make.

Cheers :)

Not wet. WEN is the brand, standard 6" wheels with just the one speed. Wasnt much there to remove really.

On the handles that im planning for my "all in" set, i got the idea from west coast picks who did a video about stabilized wood handles. I found someone on etsy who sells pen blanks, knife and gun handles. He is willing to actually cut me thin strips. Since i dont have that ability to add much more to my 3rd floor apt for tools.

Favorite pick... Gem ? ?
I've found using a caliper helps to know where you are when shaping the pick. Also, on picks like standard hooks and gems, I like to keep a bit of the edge on the very tip of the pick. I think it helps grab and feel pins, but that's totally up to one's preference. Totally love how polished that shaft is, that will be silky smooth in and out.

NICE WORK!
