What to include on entry level el resume.

Postby Shortflyer » 21 Dec 2016 12:25

Hello, I am trying to become a locksmith. I have experience picking locks as well as collecting locks. Almost all of the pick I have I have made myself. I graduated from college with a bs in mathematics. I dont have any professional carpentry experience but I have been good at building things and working with my hands my whole life. I want to do something where I am using these skills. I have helped family members on multiple projects including several wooden decks, sheds and a house where I also did some wiring. I am going to take a dcjs certification class in March I hope. What should put o. A locksmith resume to get hired as an entry level tech? How can I include my non professional experience on a resume?

Honestly, I think you'd be best going right to the company and talking to the owner in person. You won't get an institutional job without experience but there are a number of companies willing to hire people without experience who have the right attitude and ambition.

There is a rather large company in Atlanta willing to take on new guys that have mechanical aptitude only. I think if you can stress that you know how to turn a wrench, pardon the pun, you'll be far more successful than any resume.

This industry is largely "mom and pop", "brick and mortar" companies. While they will accept resumes and search Indeed or LinkedIn, they're far more likely to "bite" to someone that comes in and wants to talk to them. Just don't do it unannounced (things get very hectic at times). Call ahead or email and explain your situation and say you'd like to take a few minutes of their time to speak.

Search Craigslist first. Any business owner willing to post a job posting on an informal website like that will have the time to talk to you.

And if you're convinced that this line of work is for you, fight like hell to get the job and your foot into the industry. I don't drive a sports car but I've got 2 relatively new cars, a house, and a lot of other cool toys. You won't be rich but you'll never have to worry about paying the bills. And you'll get to see all sorts of neat shit and meet some of the most upstanding people you'll ever know. I can't remember ever dreading going to work - I've had plenty of anxious mornings for jobs that I wasn't so sure were going to work out the way I thought but, hell, that's par for the course as far as I'm concerned.

Good luck. PM or email me if you need more help. I was in your shoes once, I know how it goes.

Oh, and a degree in mathematics will serve you well when it comes to master key systems and many other aspects of this trade. Do your best to read up on master keying theory before you head out to shake some hands - if you can grasp that concept and get that across in the interview you'll be doing good.

It's just basic math but for some guys it's like learning a foreign language. I've worked with quite a few guys that needed pinning work sheets and formulas using every part of PEMDAS to make sense of it but I never needed anything more than my head and I'm sure you're far more competent with math than I ever was (we don't use differential equations so I don't know much about that anymore).

I have to second what Tyler said. A resume isn't a bad idea to bring with you and offer it after a face-to-face meeting, but I'd never send one unsolicited. It might work for Xerox, but not for small lockshops.

If you don't have much in the way of lock, mechanical or construction background to put in a resume, you might want to skip it. I don't think it would hinder your chances. I also think that highlighting your lack of experience isn't a great idea.

You may want to consider sending a note to the people you spoke with thanking them for their time, and including your contact info.

The words "I have experience picking locks" should never come out of your mouth unless asked by a potential employer :)

I'd also leave out, "I want to learn to manipulate a safe because it doesn't leave evidence behind if you wear gloves."

Or, "I know a lot about prison and high security locks. I spent 9 to 12 years around them, with time off for good behavior."

I found a place hiring technicians but they want a cover letter. I need help writing an entry level job cover letter. I want it to include: understanding of pin tumbler locks , mechanical skill, tools.

Just Google "locksmith cover letter" and you get a bunch of examples.

I found a handful by searching "locksmith cover letter entry level." The first response is from livecareer.com. It looks like it walks you through step by step how to write one. There is an experienced letter that you can customize too. https://www.livecareer.com/builder/howitworks.aspx?utm_source=LiveCareer-Content&utm_medium=orgn&utm_campaign=lc-cover-letter-samples-modal-11662

Read a few example letters on line, pick out the things you like and describe your skills, and then plug them in.

If you can not figure out how to research this resume, then what are you going to do when you are asked to work on rekeying a Schlage wafer lock handleset or a Chicago dual-bitted padlock, troubleshooting a Norton 1601 door closer, identify a keyway, reassemble a mortise lock assembly that the customer decided to try to fix themselves first and brought all(?) the parts to the shop in a box, or any of the thousands of other lock related items you will come across?

Do your homework, and try to find various ways of phrasing your searches so you can find the answers you seek. The search terms Itdbjd used ("locksmith cover letter entry level") are not exactly rocket science. If I were doing the hiring, I'd be worried if the person could not do a basic search for information.

Unfortunately I don't think anybody here can/will write one for you. You'll either have to do some internet (or library) research and type a letter yourself, or buy a resume making program. You can find a zillion on line and/or on Amazon. If you want to spend the money, there are businesses that will take your info and put together a cover letter and resume for you (probably using the same software you can purchase yourself.
