I wanted to get her a fairly rugged set of picks, focused on SPP, but with some other tools. Tried an 8-piece set from A-1. It is a little different, they have stainless handles and the blades are chrome plated steel. The whole kit was under $20.

Here are the picks. Only came with one wrench--a nice wrench, but really need a smaller one too for small key-ways. The handles are very nice, they are stainless but have a slight satin finish and are not as slippery to me as South-Ord. The blades are chrome plated, they are completely burr free and they are extremely slick. Picked and raked a few locks and no sign of the plating coming off. In industrial plants some things are chrome plated, some gun barrel bore and chambers are even chrome plated, so done properly I am not worried about it flaking. Overall, comfortable to use. Besides needing one more wrench, I would gladly trade a couple of the picks (city rake) for an ordinary diamond.
The trade off to the supper-slick picks is thickness. 0.022" is pretty darn thick. But maybe that will be a good thing for a kid starting out--do not think she will be bending these. She will just be practicing on run of the mill American locks with fairly large key-ways. If she sticks with it, maybe she will get some Peterson picks in a few years.
