Aw shucks, thanks you guys. I didn't think it was so spectacular an observation to make. Weiser is VERY common where I live, and I've seen more than a few of them in my work as an apprentice locksmith. (And boy, do I ever hate the new ones that have the Weiser name but junky Kwikset innards! But that's a rant for another day.)
Back to the original topic, it seems to me that I might have encountered a cheapo deadbolt with a plastic shell out in the field, but I can't remember the brand. Brinks is the name coming to mind, but their deadbolts are usually marked on the face. Whatever it is, I'm going to guess that it's a lousy knock-off that shouldn't really be in use if reliable operation is expected.
