Questions about binding order

Postby WilsonTrucking » 1 Jan 2017 19:54

I've got a couple of questions about binding order. I've been picking locks for a few days now (yes, days only) and I have a few questions about the binding order of pins.

1: How vital is it when using SPP to pick in the proper order? It seems to me that some locks dont really seem to bind and I have trouble with spp on those, only getting an open by raking. Other locks, the binding order is obvious, though it doesnt seem to care if I start at pin 1 or pin 4.

2: I have a 5 pin lock that I am planning to repin once my reload kit arrives from Sparrows. I can open it right now 100% of the time via rocking, raking, spp or zipping. The question here is this: does binding order of a particular core change depending on the pins you have in it (i.e spools, serated or standard) and their position (key or driver)?

3: Does the type/size of spring used in the bible of the lock have anything to do with the binding order?

Thanks in advance for the replies.

There are many threads on the importance of, and determining, the binding order, so will not address that in this reply. The binding order can change slightly with the pins, though it has more to do with the pin channels.

Security pins may seem to change the binding order. Springs do not change the binding order.

Hi

I have also had locks that I can rake open in a few seconds, and I have a hard time trying to SPP.
In my experience it has to do with over setting the pins. With time and practice you will get it.
And the binding order is just that, the order the pins will bind. It does not matter if you start in the front or the back, the pins will bind in the same order.

The binding order is the order the pins bind caused by manufacturing imperfections. Chambers not drilled perfectly in a line, diameter of the chambers or pins not perfectly equal. If you have a lock with tight tolerances, then it's hard to tell which pin binds most currently. Here you can try using heavy tension which will cause the pins to bind more (example SARGENT cylinders). Raking / rocking is a very powerful technique for mostly standard pin locks with not too extreme bitting. It's like trying many different combinations very quickly and /or using the physical principle of momentum preservation (kinetic attack). This can sometimes be much easier than SPP. But if you have such a lock, then practice SPP as it will teach you a lot. Also you can try with less pins and populate more and more chambers to see when / where you fail. Oversetting is one very common mistake and you should try detecting it (key pin not loose anymore, other pins drop). When changing pins, the binding order will change most probably.
Less talented, but patient and persevering.
