Chubb Cruiser?

Postby safecracker33 » 25 Jun 2016 18:19

Got a few Chubb padlocks recently and just got round to picking them open, they look like either earlier, or less secure versions of the Chubb Cruiser, but this is the first I have seen of this padlock despite being a locksmith/safe engineer for a lot of years. If anyone has any information on these locks it would be appreciated. Also, I will be rekeying these and some Chubb Cruiser padlocks so if anyone knows the key step heights it would probably speed things up for me.

The one on the right of the pictures is a Chubb 'medium quality' galvanised padlock with steel shackle and 4 brass levers; made in 2" 2½" and 3" sizes. Probably 1920's-1930's, although the catalogue picture shows a more nearly square body shape so this might be later.

Here is a picture of tools being sold on ebay (no reader with them). The middle two tools are for Chubb Cruiser. You can see at some point in the locks evolution, there have been changes.
The cruiser pick left of centre, you can see a slot for a ward, then the bolt thrower.
The cruiser pick right of centre, no ward section, and no bolt thrower. I dont know if this also means less levers, but it kinda looks like it from the picture.

Unlike most lever padlock bolts, the Cruiser bolt lath is not guided by stumps running in lanket holes. It rides on a strip attached to the backplate, so the bolt lath has a channel under it. To avoid hitting this fixed strip, the bolt step has to be cut away at the very end of the key. This can be seen on the reader.

I bought them off ebay(the above picture I took off the ebay listing, and it had no instructions). I was lucky enough to meet Capt Dunc today who set me straight on how they worked and how to use them. Its great to meet talented guys like him, who are a wealth of knowlege.
Cheers Capt

Cheers If you want a borrow, let me know, I will post them down to you. The pins, are hard to handle though, Ive been on the kitchen floor cursing a few times.
Other decoders I own, have good pin pickers, and numbered trays. Not this particular one.
