I got a pretty good deal on one of these used. Was taking it apart and it almost seems like there are supposed to be two ball bearings in here, but mine has only one. The teardown/gutting videos I see on YouTube don't show everything clearly so I can't be sure. Can anyone confirm if there are one or indeed two? I'm sure I can get some from Home Depot since the one in here appears to be a 3/8"...

Never mind. After another hour and a half of looking I finally found my answer.

Ok, new question and I really can't find anything on this becuase I think something is amiss with this lock. I'm starting to see why I got a "deal" on it, but maybe I can fix it. The shackle stays locked in unless I use a key - naturally, but the problem is that the entire shackle comes out of the body, even if I just use the operating key. Granted the rest of the lock doesn't come apart unless I use the control key, but I'm thinking a pin is missing - most likely from the hole at the bottom of the shackle? I'm seeing how it would work (which I admit is one of my main interests in this lock), but if I'm correct, does anyone know the type of pin?

I found the thread that shows 831 and 833 roll pin photos. Can buy a roll pin at home depot or auto zone. viewtopic.php?f=35&t=63375&start=15#p469717Squelchtone

If there's an Ace hardware in your 'hood, I've generally found them to have a far wider selection of loose hardware like roll pins, set screws, brass stock, etc.

Yep, I did find it Squelchtone. See? I do know how to use search! I actually did get the pins. Closest Home Depot near me that carries them was 12 miles away (the ones that do carry them around here have a ton) and they're a bit too long but there was nothing between 1/2" and 3/4"...but I can file it. Getting it in is the other story. Need to pick up some vise grips tomorrow. I find it odd the pin was missing. Those things certainly don't just go in, and they don't just fall out AFAIK. I may check Ace just for S&G (and no that's not Sargent and Greenleaf...lol)

I found the easiest way to get roll pins in and out is with a "pin punch". See here: http://www.harborfreight.com/5-piece-lo ... 93111.htmlVise grips have a likelihood of bending your roll pin so if you use that method just be careful!

I did pick up a punch but it's not going in. It's an 1/8" hole and I'm using an 1/8" pin. I was considering the vise grips to close the pin a bit so it will go in. I'm normally mechanically inclined but tension/roll pins are something I'd never heard of before yesterday.

Make sure the shackle is inserted through the padlock body before putting the roll pin in, Im good at making goofs like that and then having to go back and do the work twice.

Lol, no need to tell me - I'm the type to get the stuff like that right but the obvious stuff wrong.

So I managed to break a pin punch trying to get this darn thing in (1/8") - and afterwards found that Ace has metric roll pins. Their M3x12 is the perfect length (still not sure about diameter) which makes me think the pin it's supposed to take is metric (1/2" is too small, 3/4" is too long), but I need a new punch. 3mm is a bit smaller than 1/8 but still doesn't seem to want to go in - does anyone happen to know the exact size of the pin this shackle needs?

It is most likely NOT metric. They just ordered the pin length that they needed. Get the correct diameter roll pin, then cut it to length. Gordon
Just when you finally think you have learned it all, that is when you learn that you don't know anything yet.

Then I'm really lost. a 3mm - even crimped - is still too large, and a 1/8" is even larger than that. 3/32" is too small. I've got a dremel so I'm ready to cut whatever but the diameter is not working with me here.
