Lock Repair Manual, published by The National Locksmith, copyright 1988, 95 pages, 6" X 9". No ISBN number.
This book appears to be a collection of magazine articles that ran in the magazine in the 1980's. The black and white pictures range from vaguely useful to undecipherable blobs. Overall, not a suggested book unless one of the topics in it is of interest. It is not a systematic guide to repairing common locks. It should not be confused with The National Lock Smith Guide: Door Lock Encyclopedia, which is a systematic how-to-guide to disassembly, re-keying, and assembly of some of the more common KIK and deadbolt locks.
Contents:
1. Abloy's 2787 Deadbolt
2. Retrofitting, maintaining, and installing Adam's Rite locks. Main point on maintenance seems to hose them down with WD-40. The installation article uses a drill motor-powered circular saw that one would have to search eBay to find. Sort of interesting articles, but it is not any sort of systematic introduction to store front locks.
3. Assa Locks. A 3 page summary of what Assa was selling then.
4. Converting Best Functions (KIK)
5. Chicago Double Sided Keys. Shows an interesting way of reading a core that has been removed from a lock so as to cut a key to fit. Includes a method to remove the core from a lock when one has access to the back of it.
6. Servicing Corbin/Russwin Locksets
7. Repairing Mortise Locks. A few pointers on patching old mortise locks.
8. Converting Sargent Functions
9. Schlage Key 'N Keyless locks. An early electronic door lock that used an infra-red bream so the KIK could talk to the deadbolt.
10. Converting Schlage Lock Functions
11. Schlage Wafer Locks. Notes that they ended production in 1980. Article does not go over how to pick them using-the-bottom-part-of-a-key tool. Does go over how to fit keys to them.
12. Decoding Simplex Combinations. How to determine the combination of a disassembled combination door lock (the kind with five Roman numerals in a circle and a push button for each one)
13. Unican Simplex Locks. The ones seen today, with a vertical row of five numbers. More of an introduction to them than anything new.
13. Unilock
14. A600 Weiser Handle Set
15. Yale Removable Cores. Large Format Removable Cores -- a three page introduction to them.
16. Mall Security and Gate Locks. Well, this was the 80's. Something had to protect the Parachute Pants, OP shirts, High Tops, and Sony Walkmans. Some of these style locks are probably still in use. Goes over some systems, surely obsolete now, that used keys to record when and by whom doors were opened by marking rotating paper discs. Sort of like a night watchman's clock that was bolted to the store and each worker had a different key.
17. Lateral File Cabinet Locks
Overall, a disappointing book. Maybe worthwhile if one of the subjects is of interest and one gets a really good deal on it.
