Wierd tool box lock

Pull up a chair, grab a cold one, and talk about life as a locksmith. Trade stories of good and bad customers, general work day frustrations, any fun projects you worked on recently, or anything else you want to chat about with fellow locksmiths.

Wierd tool box lock

Postby shutterstuff » 16 Jan 2017 17:23

At first glance I thought I was dealing with a standard cam lock. One of the volunteer fire departments lost the keys to a Channel Lock brand tool box (I have never seen one before and Google was no help). I figured I would impression the locks but could not find a key that fit. So i figured I would replace the cam locks until I pulled them out. They are slightly smaller in diameter and a standard cam lock will not fit in the hole. Not to mention one of them has a strange tail piece. Any suggestions?

I can't see the picture. Clicking on the link requires me to sign into Google to view it.

Is it a double sided key, like a Trimark TM13?

Google screwing up Picasa... now I have to relearn how to share photos! Let me see if I can fix it.

It is a double sided key, closer to an Ilco 1620 but that key does not fit smoothly.

Yes, but I can't see the keyway. If it's a single offset, maybe a 1660? If more complex, maybe a 1605 or 1527. Sometimes I've gotten a Sentry safe SS4 to work in some of the smaller locks.

There's another one in the 1600's I've used for these, but I don't recall the number off the top of my head. I think it was a gas cap key; maybe 1624 and 1624R?? I'll have to check tomorrow, unless I remember later.

The 1660 is also a Strattec 322861 and that does not fit. Backwards. The 1620 is the closest thing I can get to fit but it just does not seem right. Too snug.

Oh, and the SS4 is also backwards.

I wanna say the loud funny words too;
How about a 1611?
Have you checked the Club keys yet?

Thanks! CLB2 fits but is too long. The 1611 is the best fit so far so I am going to rekey these and be done. I may have to leave out the last wafer as the 1611 is just a bit short. I did not look in the auto section of my wall... I only have 1600+ different blanks to choose from.

I was hoping to find out who actually made these lock...

LD1 was backwards and I do not have an LD2 in stock. I ended up using the 1611.

Thanks!

If the 1611 key works, maybe the Bauer key will also. You can always cut back the shoulder and use all the wafer tumblers
