So I got a great score. I got about 50 american locks from work. some are pretty recent and look absolutely brand new. some were form the 90s, and then I got this guy, from 1989. what a beauty. works great except the shackle doesnt pop up. Spring must be shot. anyway, just wanted to share!

Reason: Just a heads up the [image] command only shows pictures if the link is to direct picture and link ends in .jpg or .gif or .png imgur.com/dhhwudud is just a link to the page where the picture's album is. Fixing link for you..

That's a beauty! I love old padlocks. Their patina make they look very cool. Thanks for sharing. Cheers

Congrats on the score!
Maybe it is just the angle, but it looks like the shackle is bent a little. Once the shackle is up, is there any spring to the shackle when you push it down towards the lock body? If not, then the spring may well be shot, broken or missing. If there is some spring-feel, then you can look closely At the shackle toe where it enters the lock body. Then bend the shackle as needed to eliminate contact with the edges of the hole.

The shackle was bent outwards just enough. I tore the lock down and cleaned it up pretty good, then squeezed the shackle in. didnt take much. it still binds inside just enough where the spring wont pop it up. could be a combination of a little corrosion, a little remaining dirt, and an old spring. may try some more cleaning.

Or maybe a little more bending in one direction or the other. Use a marker to put ink on the toe of the shackle, then close and open the lock. It should scrape off the ink where it is still contacting. Gordon

I do have a whole bunch of american locks, and i could swap parts out, but i really dont want to. i think i want to keep the original parts, even if the shackle doesnt spring up. i think ill try a little bit of sand paper, just roll it up and twist it in the hole.
