Maker of old screw type lock?

I got these from two different people. One person said it was used to secure cannons in the civil war. The other said it was used for a old gun rack. The lock itself has no markings on it anywhere. Does anyone know who made them & when? I have a hard time believing that they are really civil war locks because i got them cheap.

I seriously doubt they were used to secure cannons during the civil war.

There have been a number of manufacturers who made these, and many are still made around the world. Most are junk made from folded steel plates. Those look similar to some British ones I have seen.

you should join http://antique-locks.com/ forum and ask them there. Most of us pickers are on there, but not many of their old timey collectors are on here.

Is it the shackle that you've seen made from folded steel plates? Or the entire lock? These are brass body with a steel or iron shackle. I also doubt that they were used for a cannon though. Maybe ill follow squelchtones advice & try the antiques forum.

Ive seen that style before but these are different. The key for this lock has no threads it only turns a screw special screw that goes through a hole in the shackle to retain it. Kind of like a older screw type railroad lock which is what im thinking these might have been used for. The key in the pic is not a original but ive seen a original before from 1 of the sellers & it looks similar just steel. Its a simple hollow key cut in half. Another thing is most of the time when i see the type of lock in your post they are normally noticeably different from eachother & look hand made even the shackles normally vary enough to notice. I have seen 5 or 6 of these and they all look exactly the same.

I'm not aware of any other popular uses for these locks, so I can't say for certain that's the life your lock was brought into, but I know that these screw type locks were widely used in and around railroads. Not much to go by, but hopefully points you in the right direction.

Edit: d'oh replying when tired, didn't read one of your comments saying they might be railway locks. Don't mind me
