Bramah key question?

Information about locks themselves. Questions, tips and lock diagram information should be posted here.

Bramah key question?

Postby G-lock » 26 Feb 2017 8:44

I just bought this lock but i cannot think of any reason the lock would need such a long key. Is there a special hasp or other purpose for this key?

If you were using a job-box, it would be necessary since the lock body itself would be too short. But then again, not sure the width of the lock body would fit there.

It is unusual.

Bramah produces mortise locks with the mechanism embedded in the lock case. For double entry locks there are two mechanisms one above the other either of which will actuate the lock. Sometimes these locks could be installed in very thick doors. Possibly there is a rimlock version. These may require extra long keys and Bramah produces keys in several lengths. Since it seems Bramah keys all locks to order the customer would select the appropriate key length. For keyed alike or masterkeyed locks, the pass key or masterkey would need to be sufficiently long to 'reach' into all the locks in the suite.
In the photo, the long key possibly also fitted other locks requiring a long key, the customer mis-ordered or the customer ordered a long key for a joke.

That would make the most sense. The number on the key & the number on the lock dont match so the key is probably for a master keyed system that includes this padlock. Thank you.
