What is the width of the Schlage SC Keyway

Information about locks themselves. Questions, tips and lock diagram information should be posted here.

What is the width of the Schlage SC Keyway

Postby Vargh » 3 Mar 2017 6:45

I bought a repinnable lock that was marketed as a Schlage SC keyway but the width of the keyway is about 2 mm. Is this correct or did they make it bigger for easier lockpicking?

Thanks.

Also, on a side note the pins are about 7 mm length for the longest and about 4 mm for the smallest.

That sounds about rite. I have a bunch of locks with a schlage sc keyway and the top of the keyway on most of mine is just over 1.5mm but the bottom is closer to 3mm.
Here's a pic of 2 sc cores that both came with abus 83 series padlocks. The one marked 3000 is wide open 3mm from the bottom all the way up to the pins & much easier to pick, but the one marked 300 is more like a normal sc keyway. they both use the same schlage key.

Vargh, If anything I'd say that the keyway was made a little wider than OEM because they don't know the exact Schlage specs. It's a lot better to be a tad big than a tad small and issues with keys not going into the lock. And when locks are made, I think most if not all manufacturers try to make them more pick resistant rather than less, so I don't see that as a reason for a wider keyway IMO.

G-lock, the 3000 Abus cylinder is wider than the 300 because it's milled to accept all Schlage Obverse keyways, whereas the 300 is for Schlage C only.

Hope the info helps!

Thank you for clearing that up for me. I have been wondering why my 2 abus cores were different for awhile now.

There actually is really no SC keyway. SC denotes the brand Schlage. Key blanks are for instance, SC1, SC4, SC8, etc. Keyways would be C, CE, E, EF, F, FG, and G. There is also a P keyway that all key profiles E thru L will fit. Sometimes you will see it called a CK keyway. I sold some practice locks on ebay that had a P keyway. The P keyway is very wide at the bottom simply to allow all key profiles to fit. Its a nice wide open keyway to practice picking.
