Announcing the inaugural OzLockCon (2017)

Postby OzLockCon » 8 Mar 2017 23:56

Hi all,

I wanted to briefly drop in to let y’all know about something fun a bunch of us pickers Down Under have been organising for the community over the last wee while:

A bunch of us Oz pickers participate in infosec/hacker cons — in fact many of us actually run the lock villages at these cons (eg. BSidesCanberra, CrikeyCon, Ruxcon, and even AusCERT, + more). So while we definitely have our own awesome series of infosec cons in Australasia the one thing us Oz pickers have been envying the most are the EU/US LockCons (the distance is a real bummer).

So, we decided end last year that it was about time we had a LockCon in Down Under, and so I’d like to formally invite y’all — especially pickers in Australasia — to OzLockCon the first Australian con on just physical security.

It’s going to be running in Melbourne on June 3rd–4th, and will be open to anyone. Yup — we’re breaking tradition from the EU and US LockCons and running this event for the community in the same vein that the aforementioned hacker cons are run. We’re intending to bring together hobbyists, professionals, and LEOs.

Our Call for Papers, Workshops, and Demos are open now — if you’re thinking of sharing some of the knowledge you have please consider taking a look.

Disclosure: this is a community-run event, run at-cost. We’re currently bootstrapping this event out of our own back pockets (not to mention time) and we’re offering sponsorship slots for organisations who operate within this space (eg. lock vendors, locksport suppliers, and security companies), if you know of any organisation that might be interested in sponsoring us, please send them our way.

Feel free to ask any questions (psst, check out the FAQ on the site first).

Excellent! I'm glad you stopped by, I've been seeing news of this on Twitter as well as at keypicking where I chatted with your or one of your fellow organizers.

I hope our members who live close enough will be able to attend and meet some like minded folks!

Cheers

I'll be there - I encourage those in Australia to support the event. We don't get much of an opportunity to attend security 'cons in Australia (particularly at an affordable price point), so we need to support new ventures.

Long story short, If you live in Australia and have ever whined about not being able to get to a con, then you need to pony up or shut up.

I checked and for someone living far away such as Perth, the Quantas round trip airfare right now is about $750 AUD

Yeah, coming across from Perth and Darwin is always going to be hard, but you can find cheap flights. Tigerair is selling Perth to Melbourne return for about $340 AUD.
Additionally, we are doing a 'hackers-helping-hackers' thing (if you check out the Ozlockcon website FAQ section) where financially disadvantaged or those who are under represented in the security community can apply for a free ticket.

(For those that haven't heard of it before, check out https://hackershelpinghackers.com/ )

Appreciate letting us post here Squelchtone. Hopefully you'll make it down for one of the future conferences one day 8)

Still a whole lot better than having to fly to the US or Europe though.......this is about as affordable as it is going to get in Australia - given most of our population lives on the east coast (with Melbourne and Sydney our two most populaced cities). Air travel is significantly more expensive here than the US.

Believe me I understand, I'm flying down and staying 3 nights (with the additional cost of having my family with me) to support the event.

If you work in the security industry (physical or INFOSEC) consider whether you can claim the expenses related with attending as a tax deduction for Professional Development. Have a look at the ATO website or speak with an accountant/tax agent.
