Reying schlage locks

Postby Kypicker1 » 13 Mar 2017 12:06

Ok guys. I've just moved into a new house and the locks are schlage levers, knobs, dead bolts, and a handle set. I want to rekey the locks for peace of mind. I've purchased a reykeying set model 40-132. My existing key is a 58874c. I now have to purchase a set of keys that will not work with the 58874c. Can someone please help me with a key code that will not work with that? Do I just need to change one number or should I change them all ( the numbers on the key that is)? Thanks in advance.

You just need a new set of precut keys. Use the old key to get the lock apart, dump the bottom pins, and install new pins that match up with the cuts on the new key.

Ok thanks. I'm ordering four keys from a distributor. I will just pick some random numbers for the new key. Thanks again

As long as one or more of the new numbers differs from the old by at least two, you'll be fine. For example, your key of 58874 would be OK if it became 78874. You can either get some new precut keys like jeffmoss26 said (eBay has many), or even file down one of your old keys like mentioned above.

As a hobbyist, filing would be cool to do. But the flip side of filing keys down is that all the old keys for your lock could also be made to fit the new combination if someone else knew where to file them at.

EDIT: I see that you have posted that you're going to order keys from a distributor. Since you're going that route, check to see if keys are offered with high-low bittings (a large numerical difference between each cut) such as 39485 or 72926. This will make your locks a little more pick resistant and it won't cost anything extra.

I have quite a few Schlage factory cut keys with random cuts. I can send you one or more with some copies for free if you want.
