Pinning locks with security pins

Postby DerekM804 » 16 Mar 2017 22:30

Hi everybody I'm new to this form and I'm not sure if this is been discussed anywhere I have been looking all around and I haven't seen it but I'm trying to advance my skills into the security pin aspect of picking, and I have a few practice locks that I want to pin up with spool pins and Serrated pins but I didn't know if it makes a difference on how many security pins are in a lock with standard pans like for example my Abus has five spools and one standard and another lock I have has for spools and one standard but I want to start learning with a lower amount so I can start understand what happening and I wanted to know if I had three pins would I have to have two spools and one standard or can I have two standards and one spool and same with the serrated pins does it matter how many are in the lock? i'm going to pin my practice lock up and I want to make sure that I maximize the learning experience!! So if somebody could please help me figure out if it matters if I have all spools and one standard or a few spools and few standards or if there's a certain ratio I guess is what I'm trying to figure out with spools and serrated and then if it matters if I mix the two serrated and spores is there a ratio between how many spools standards and serrated or can I just pin it up to random ?? Sorry for the long post I'm
Very excited to learn . Any help is appreciated

I personally would put one normal pin in a lock with mushroom pins, some spools are OK in all chambers but others are like a mushroom pin and the lock won't work well with all chambers filled with them. Serrated pis are OK in all chambers. You might also try different spring strengths and lengths for a challenge.

Pretty much what Jim has said. Usually the normal pin I put into the last chamber, so that it holds the plug still while inserting and removing a key.

I have noticed that on most of the locks i have that have spool in it they usually have either five spools and one standard or four spools and one standard that's why I was wondering if it made a difference. so for me to pin my practice lock I want to start with three pins would the best way then be to just put two spools and one standard in to get the best idea when trying to pick spools to see what's going on?
