Duke Duke Duke, Duke of Earle mortise cylinder

A skill known and practiced for years by seasoned locksmiths, impressioning a working key from a blank is a popular new addition in locksport circles everywhere. Get your blanks and Pippin files and get busy!

I work in a building that's been around since the 1800's, and while hanging out in the old abandoned in house locksmith shop in our basement I found an Earle brand mortise cylinder. I really like the logo, it looks like an old Ford logo to me.

ebay came through and I easily found the ER1 blanks I need to impression a key.

I'll update the post as I have some time to prep the key blank and do some filing =)

If anyone has any info on the Earle company I am interested in learning about them. I think they were from Reading PA.

*the finish on the cylinder is brown, which I'm not a fan of, but I dont want to polish it too much and remove any of the logo. the brass you see if from my light buffing/sanding to see how easily the finish would come off.

Impressioning such an old lock with the risk of ruining it? Be very gentle and light handed
I'd pick and disassemble it, and then file down a key to match the pins.

Cheers :)

I have two - no original keys - SE1 and AR1 work fine as shown below:
