My point was though that Liam stocked hundreds of thousands of obscure blanks, some of which he probably may never sell or at best sell very few over a long period of time. It takes a lot of investment. So I can understand his pricing. He was also willing to sell a single key blank. How much profit is there in that? He also would research blanks for locksmiths at no cost whatsoever. So I take umbrage when people say he was ripping people off. He saw a niche in the market and filled it, he didn't do it to make himself wealthy by price gouging.
On the other hand simply ordering from a source and drop shipping doesn't really represent the same investment in stock, so obviously it can be a cheaper option.

they did have some cool blanks... should be interesting to see what happens now. Remember, dont complain about blank prices until you need 5 of them and they cost 15$ a piece! ... just cause we are all used to sub $2 blanks some of us are the locksmith and the customer lol

When blanks cost $15 each you charge accordingly. If the customer doesn't want to pay then don't order them. I bought some stupid little double-sided cam lock blanks the other day from my supplier, Ilco blanks at that, they cost $3.47 each! So I charge $6 cut.

Yep, prices on oddball blanks can be $ even through regular suppliers of keys. Take the wee little L6FM they are like 3.50 each Just supply & demand, mark up the prices.

OWW! That is pretty steep for the blank your getting... Thats more than what I pay for OEM Medecos. Usually for oddball keys, I order them in a pack of ten from places like American Key Supply or keycraze.com. Not to bash bluedogkeys here too much, but they've set there price too high on those, same goes for the $9 shipping. Especially if keycraze sells a pack of 10 clopays for $10.10. Of course when it comes to a real oddball blank, then I feel their prices are more justified.

WOW! I paid 25 cents each recently from my distributor. It's an Ilco 1537. This was in a 10 pack.

That is really cheap. I typically pay 70 cents in a box of 50 and $1.10 per piece for 10.

Gotta agree with Jim, that's a super deal! I can't get any Ilco blanks for a quarter a piece unless it's a 250 pack of Taylors. And not to go too off topic but I feel intrigued to share the following: So I've done a little research into these doors since my last post, as I've never had to work on one of these locks personally. It looks like they cylinders are just cheapo rim types. So I got to thinking that if I had to pay $6 something a blank for that lock, I'd rather invest that money in a Schlage rim cylinder and install that on the door. But who knows if Blue Dog actually charges $6, because that quoted price is indeed identical to the one over at mysecuritypro. Maybe they want more or less? Just a few thoughts I had...

this was about 5-6 years ago at this point so i dont really remember who i got them from, probably my security pro , cause no one else had them
i didnt really know better and it was also sorta a rush job. ... i was going to replace the cylinder but at the time, i didnt have quite the stock of random locks lying around so i had to make due with what i had.
i was doing this for free (PIZZA) ... as i usually do for my family.
the several times i had called blue dog, it was for very specific blanks that they dont make anymore which now i have quite a bit of as i stock piled them when i finally found what i was looking for and blue dog needed quite a bit more information then i had at the time besides the random blank number i happened to find in a very old key catalog somewhere.
The two key blanks at the time were Yale Y9E (Which is a Dominion and an ILCO number) and a very specific bit and barrel blank that perfectly fits the LA mailbag padlocks (i happened upon both of these blanks by accident at local shops and paid too much in my opinion nowadays).... i was on hold for about 3 minutes each time while they looked and they just said nope... and that was that...

I'm surprised that they needed more info. Usually a photo of the blank is all Liam needed to come up with the blank. In fact when time is money his free service of identifying key blanks saved us quite a bit of money. I didn't like the $9 minimum shipping, but who else ships a single key? When he first started he would deliver the keys personally to our shop.
