Joseph bates & sons patent lock

Forgot how to dial the combination on that old safe? Think you got the right numbers but the handle is stuck? What safe should you buy? Ask your safe questions here!

I was just kidding about him beating it. But it sometimes feels like the thing to do.

Could you show me what a modern working system looks like.

The recent ones I can think of were Churchill CHAP (Churchill anti pick), but I think they are obsolete now, and the only other modern one I can think of is S&G FAS 6890. I will try to sort you some pictures out.

What is this anti-pressure device? Is there a difference between the 6880 and the 6890? Or do both (and also the 6860) have this anti-pressure device? I cound not see any difference between the 6880 and the 6890, but may the difference is deep down and can't be seen so easily? Here are photos of a 6860: http://wiki.koksa.org/FAS_vds_Klasse1_verstellbar. I could also make photos of a 6890.

The anti pressure device on the bates lock was where lever 7 would be.

Instead of being a lever, it moves the bolt stump out of the way, making it impossible to pick.If you leave it alone, you only need to pick the front 6 levers.
It also jammed the pick, if you tried to lift it, like a normal lever.

Capt Dunc pointed out, that it was also a way to stop overlifting the lever pack, and catching the gates as they fall on this particular lock

I think I know what you mean. In Price wrote in his book something about this.
