I bought a NOS Master System-29 on eBay for a song. Seeing as it's brand new, it comes how it came when it was new. With no core. It says on the box that you can use a variety of different brand cores in it. After looking around, it looks like they meant the " key in knob / lever " style of core ( at least that's what ASSA Abloy calls them on their website ).
My question is.. Which one fits this lock? Master is notorious for having really crappy 4 or 5 pin cores.. But most of those are 6 pinners. I would really want to do a Medeco core on it ( this is actually a running joke with a friend of mine that says he can pick ANY Master lock ). But, after that is done, it's actually a pretty decent sized padlock, and I would like to put it to use.
Please post a pic of your padlock body from the side and one of the hole on the bottom showing he hole shape and the bit way deep in the padlock that the cylinder interacts with, this will help our members give you a better answer.

Thanks Squelchtone
Ok! Here are some pictures. The over all boy width is about 2.5 inches. I measured the shackle width ( I don't know why I thought that might be helpful ), and the width of opening where the core goes. I also included a picture looking into the lock, and the different sides of the box, in case that might be of any help.
Oh, another thing. I need to measure the depth of how far the area is for the core, but I don't have an accurate way of doing that right now. I will be able to post that tomorrow when I am at my shop and have my other tools. I was hoping someone might know about these locks or have experience with them. I can post any other information about it if anyone has any questions if I can!
The kinda revolutionary thing about this lock, when it came out, was that practically any knob cylinder would fit in it, unfortunately almost nobody was interested in owning a big beefy padlock that was too large to fit on most things. Also this padlock was fairly expensive, due to its being very well built. I can tell you that it's high cost is the only reason I inherited it from my Dad, when I bought him out back in 1994. The plastic cylinder retainer was the piece of junk about this lock, but even in those days company's were already at work, cheapening their products.
Looks like you are missing the 'cylinder extender' I actually have this same lock & it's nib but I'm not parting with the piece you are missing. Why not just use a knob lock cylinder and cut the tailpiece down, until it will work*--Nobody will know that you cheated from the outside of the lock and I'll forget in a few days myself
Far as measuring the depth of the cylinder hole, doesn't your caliper have a small end on it's backside, that extends when you open up the jaws of the caliper? Mine does and it's for just such a purpose, I believe
*might need to do some welding to make it work I'm sure the junky plastic cylinder extender can be replaced with something
Yeah, the box shows a " cylinder extender " on it, and it says to " only use master cylinder extensions ". Which I have looked online, and can not find.. And most people are probably just like you.. Not wanting to part ways with theirs.. Which is understandable. I guess I will have to machine one myself lol.
Out of curiosity, how much were they new? I have been looking at a #19 Master, and I know they quit making them around 2000, and they retailed for just over $40 dollars. The #19 doesn't have a removable core, but the keyway design on it is fantastic.. and it's a 6 pinner.
You are correct. I used the back metal part of the micrometer to measure it. It measure out to 1.1450" That's probably a little longer than it needs to be, because when the metal plate is on the bottom holding it in, it will probably need some give. So I guess it would probably be 1" long. I just need to know what kind of core will fit that.
Just FYI. The retainer plate and retainer nut on this one, are both steel. Pretty stout at that. Here is a picture of what is in the bag for the part.
I just found out that the lock picking lawyer did a video on this exactly lock, and really showed how it worked and what it needed to work. I shot him a message. If anyone is interested...
I will do that. I think I did read somewhere online that if you put a longer core in it, you can make it work. So this is a great idea. But the actuator in the lock is... Unique lol.

Yes it does. I posted the meausrement of that about 4 posts up
I did email Master, and this is the response I was 99% sure I was going to get.
Thanks for the input so far guys! It's much appreciated. Anything I do find out, I will relay on here so hopefully other people can get their parts problems sorted out.

Yeah, maybe so. I have been in contact with a few different locksmiths I know. So maybe through one of them or one of their buddies I can find one.. Or a few... But hopefully 1. If not, I got a good deal on a collectable lock haha. But, my brother works at a machine shop, and my dad has a mill and a lathe, so I am sure I can figure something out.
Maybe talk with LockPickingLawyer ask if he can give you measurements on it ? With this pic you can see its a cup like Extension with a regular screwdriver blade inside that's what grabs the Key In Knob (K.I.K.) Cylinder.
Even Duct tape can't fix stupid But it can muffle the sound ! Jim
