old taylor machine cutting kw1 keys slightly slanted

Postby Jremington401 » 28 Apr 2017 20:28

I bought this old taylor machine for $40 and banged out a bunch of sc1 keys and kw1 keys on it but for some reason the sc1 keys come out perfect and the kw1 keys keep coming out with the first and second cut slightly slanted and the keys will only work if you jiggle them. I've look at everything on the machine and can't figure out what's going wrong. Any ideas guys?

A picture of the bad keys would be more helpful.

How old was the original key, that was duplicated ?
(The bottom edge maybe worn down, from use)

For S&Gs, give a look.
I've gotten a few blanks off eBay this way.
(Shouldn't affect a line of keys)
Check warding, to vice jaw

Anyone else have ideas ?

When I used to use an old Curtis #2, sometimes shims would be required to keep the key upright in the vise. This was because the vise would clamp down near the middle of the blank instead of the very bottom. The best place to put the shim is in front of the key, thereby distributing the force of the jaw.

I actually have this machine in my van, the problem I often have with it is kwikset keys will often
slip in the vise while cutting them. I hafta use a shim to keep the kwikset blanks from slipping.
