how much might this antique Diebold safe weigh?

I have the chance to get a free Diebold safe, it is locked, so I cannot remove the door.

It is 35 tall and 25 wide by 23 deep on wheels. Wondering if anyone might know what it might weigh. 500? 750? 1000?

I have a heavy duty hand truck and a buddy to help get it up the 5 steps out the basement hatchway and some 2x2 and 4x4 blocking to get it off the ground and tilt it into the back of the Jeep Cherokee.

If by "heavy duty hand truck" you mean something other than "refrigerator dolly", I'd suggest looking into one. Something like this:

The rear stabilizer on that alone makes it worthwhile to rent one (or find a friend that has one and borrow it if you can).

Speaking as someone who has had... interesting... experiences moving big heavy things with a regular hand truck before.

That is the size of my Hall safe, and it weighs over 3,000 pounds. Had to have it delivered with an automotive tow truck. The door alone weighs 500-600 pounds.

So the weight range can vary greatly.

Ive moved a few safes before and I usually let physics do the work not my back, but this safe is an hour away so it will end up a drive to see it and when I roll it around and tilt it a little, I'll decide then if I can get it up the 5 steps out of that basement. Construction can certainly give a variation in weight. I have moved several of the size you note--Victor, Cary, couple of unknown brands, a Diebold and most recent a Reliable Most seemed 600 lb and less

What is the vertical distance of those five steps? I would consider a couple of ramps and a good come a long (no, not the Wal Mart variety) Tip safe on ramps and pull it on its side to spread the weight

Possibly rent a motorized refrigerator dolly. Then it will lift the safe up the stairs, only requiring effort from you to keep the safe from tipping over.

This no longer sounds like a "free" safe when I have to rent moving equipment :/

I was just going to mention I watched a fellow remove a ginormous floor copier from my employer's building and he had a motorized dolly that "walked" up and down stairs after he had the device strapped on. You would probably be further ahead to rent one because that thing looks like a heavy bugger.
