First post - and my design for a simple DIY practice lock

Hi all,

Just created an account. I've been monkeying around with locks for a month or so. I'm interested, of course, because I have a curious mind.. but I'm also interested in the parallels between the false sense of security that locks afford, and our notions of security in the digital realm.

Anyway, I was at my office today and came up with an idea for a practice lock. 30 minutes later (because I have easy access to a milling machine and laser cutter), I had a physical version of it. It's pretty cool and it kind of works better than I expected. Here's a 1 minute video showing it:

I'm interested to hear/read peoples' thoughts.. I'm a beginner so maybe this is something that someone else has done before.

Thanks,
Rob

Nice work. Looks very good.

Your idea about being able to slide the sections apart for repinning the lock is interesting. However, you may want to make some sort of clip to hold the sections together when picking. Can just see two sections sliding a little bit apart while picking and... Houston... we have liftoff!!! Bye-bye spring.

Keep up the great ideas, and let us see them!

That seems like a really good idea. I do have 2 suggestions. Make the "disks" thinner so you can have 1 disk per chamber. The other is make them a bit larger diameter. This would make holding the lock easier for those without a vise.
Of all the things I've lost in life, I miss my mind the most!

That's very interesting. I like that by using those discs you get an ergo type hold on the lock to pick. You could mill them in any comfortable shape, that's pretty cool. Nice if you dont wanna throw in a padlock or vise every time you pick it. Id agree with some type of clamp or bungie type piece to hold it firmly together. One pin to the eye and you will come up with something im sure. Excellent work. Seems very outside the box.
