What is the white colored filler material used in old Victor safes? The one I have feels like plaster but is harder/stronger than plaster.

Alum. Its supposed to libarate steam when heated to stop contents of safe catching fire.
Sorry didnt read your post properly. I thought it was a "Victorian" safe
