Can't open really old safe

Forgot how to dial the combination on that old safe? Think you got the right numbers but the handle is stuck? What safe should you buy? Ask your safe questions here!

Can't open really old safe

Postby Johnnyb1123 » 21 May 2017 18:27

Hello. There is a safe at my work (I work at a convenience store) that has been there as long as anyone can remember. It's bolted to the ground and we don't have any of it's combination. I am including pictures. How would we go about getting this monster open? https://imgur.com/gallery/eGz4A

It is not the policy of this forum to openly discuss this kind of task in public. There is a vetting process for acquiring this type of information from our members..
When I finally leave this world.. Will someone please tell my wife what I have REALLY spent on locks ...

Are you the owner or manager? Call Amsec, provide proof of ownership and give them serial number, they might give you the combo it was shipped with but its quite likely it has been changed over the years so you may need to hire a safe tech to manipulate or drill it open for $500-$800 dollars which is the normal price range in the US.

I tried looking up the serial number online and I got no results. There's a huge sticker that's worn off on the top of the safe for a different company but it's so worn I can't read it. I was thinking that the small metal piece on the top can be taken off with the right tools but I'm not sure.

Well, safes are meant to be difficult to open, so unscrewing the 4 bolts on the top won't let you in. And since we are here, neither unbolting the hinge would.

If you want to use it as a safe after you've opened it, a professional opening is what you need. Or you could contact a teacher in Illinois and ask her students for help.

If you want to open it hoping there's something valuable still inside, let me make an educated guess: it's empty.

Whatever you decide to do, stay safe :)

But did I say look it up online? No, I said *call* Amsec. Also you havent answered if you are the safe owner or a curious employee?

As others said dont unbolt the hinges, handle, and whatever you do, dont smash the number dial off with a hammer, once thats done, you''ll never get in and the safe technician will either charge more or wont want to even touch it.

I called amsec before and they never returned our call so I went online and couldn't find the model. The owner doesn't want to deal with it because he doesn't understand (language barrier), but we want to get it up and operational so I'm seeing what our options are. What about the small metal plate bolted on the top of it? Is that a boarded up drop slot or something?

call a safe man and get it done correctly. it's a cool little box and getting it functional would benefit the business. there are also insurance advantages to having it working as well and it's better protection then that tiny thing sitting next to it.

Call Amsec. Have the serial number, and be ready to answer a few questions about the safe. Their tech dept has been good to work with the few times I have called them; you will have to prove ownership of the safe. I have been put on hold when I called, but have never left a message and waited for them to return a call
