An real warded type lock usually has a lot of slack in turning, until you actually hit the mechanism,
so your description sounds correct, although to be fair-- a lever type lock usually has just as much slack,
because both systems can appear very much alike
You know the only real difference between a warded or a lever lock is the addition of 1 or more levers
Lots of furniture locks and old padlocks share the warded mech and the more secure add a lever or two least around where I'm at--can get much scarier in Europe, where security is an old tradition, instead of simply a thing that can be left out, anytime profits need to be maximized as is commonly done in the US
