Most lock shops seem to have ~8x10" "doors" with sample locks mounted in them for sales demonstration purposes.
Do these things have a name? Any idea where one might find a few relatively inexpensively?
(I'm in the southeast U.S., if that matters)

Lock Displays. Cheap is not happening unless you get lucky on eBay. But you can make them fairly inexpensively.

I would refer to it as a lock display, easy to find if you use that search term. Are you looking for a working lock display with a jamb and strike? That will be harder to find, I looked for you online and saw this antique one I linked, and one other electric deadbolt. An electric dead bolt may be the way to go if your looking for a latching one, maybe they want to display how they can easy lock with a push of a button. good luck http://i.ebayimg.com/00/s/MTYwMFgxMDY0/ ... I had in mind a single display with a few 'doors'--that would mean jambs, strikes, and hinged, but I suppose either with or without the jamb & strike would still be fun to play with.

I cannot see it being too hard to buy some lumber and hardware to build your own...but like GWiens said, it won't be something you could do on the cheap. I really like the idea though, and have been considering building my own 1/3 or 1/2 door that I can set up with several deadbolts and knobs just for fun.

I see old doors thrown out to side of road, or the local Door/Window shop they have with debris to be thrown out. They would be happy if you took. Then a Circular saw to cut out the section you need. Hopefully one with an additional deadbolt opening?

That sounds like a great way to make one of the displays more affordabley. But it might take some time to find the opportunity for such a thing. With anything DIY I always like to point to the value of getting something done faster. Spending time can be more costly than spending money if you value your time and/or are losing money by not getting something over with.

I am able too say only because, They have doors to be disposed of every time I drive By. I may grab one, maybe even cut out a section from a Store Front Door? Next time Time I see one?
