Mul-T-lock Parry Bros

Hi There!

New member looking for knowledge from the Locksmith guild sages!

I recently went to Europe and went on a beer tour. One thing led to another and, for whatever reason, runnign naked in a field seem like a great idea at the time!

Long story short, i lost my apartment's key. I live in canada, alberta. I am NEVER gonna see that key again lol..

Anyway, i remember when i was first getting the keys to my apartment (i rent) the landlord mentioned that if i lost them, there would be a $900 charge to re-key all of them. Gulp**

thus the conundrum. I had an old GF that used to be the assistant manager at a bank branch and i remember she asked the bank's locksmith to cut her keys for a (similar) key. He did it for her as a personal favor. I figured i could ask my friend who manages a warehouse see if his locksmith would do it. Apparently he is not as cute as a girl, or maybe i did not perceive how difficult this en devour would be. But he was told that because the key said it had "Parry bros" in it. They would not do it.

More than unwillingness i think it is more of a proprietorship thing? am i wrong?

Anyway, just wanted to see if i could pick your brains and get some sagely advice in to what to do. I have not gone to Parry bros yet. I am not unwilling to pay to grease doors! (or in this case locks heeh)

advice and suggestion are greatly appreciated. What would YOU DO?

regards,

So you were only given 1 key to your apartment? Now that you are back from Europe, how have you gotten back into your apartment? Is it your apartment or shared with other room mates or gf/bf on the lease?

Did this key open any common doors, laundry rooms, workout rooms, or pool gates as well or just your apartment's door? How many doors in and out do you have of your apartment (not apartment building, literally just your apartment) rekeying 2 doors should never be $900, perhaps if you explain the key was lost in Europe and there's no chance of a bad guy coming to your apartment should they find the lost key, could the landlord just cut you a new key to match the existing one, they have those key cut codes on file or their locksmith should have them on file.

That $900 dollar fee may just be something to scare you, what is actually written on your lease where it comes to lost keys or duplicate keys or needing extra keys? Even if they had to rekey your apartment doors, and perhaps a common lobby door, I just dont see them having to rekey every other apartment as well, that might be closer to $900 if they had to do a dozen apartments because of your key loss...

As to going into Perry Bros and batting your eye lashes or showing off your hairy man chest cleavage, I dont think this will work well. Part of buying into a high security system like Medeco, Abloy or Mul-t-Lock is the idea of key control and that only authorized people can get copies of the keys made, i.e. your land lord or authorized agents of your landlord like his maintenance guy, etc. Just be honest with landlord and see where it goes.

I'm not a locksmith, just a hobbyist though, so your mileage may vary

Thank you for your reply Squelchtone!

I was given 2 set of keys, so when i came back i had to use the spare i had given my brother (to water my Alo vera plant, i name him "AL" for short!)

no, there is no1 else i live with. The way i see it, the key that matters opens 2 main doors that lead to the main hallway. What i imagine happens after they rekey those 2 doors, is they have to rekey every tenant's keys to match the new door lock. or maybe handing out new keys for each room? Not sure.

I am I haven't told my building manager or landlord about it yet because once i do, there's no coming back :(

First off, I'm sorry to hear this.
These are general points, not aimed at you.

But, it's $900 because:
- the management has to rekey on a lost key, or be liable if someone gets in and attacks someone, where rekeying would have prevented that
- high security locks & building security are a selling point to some people when they are deciding whether or not to sign the lease
- all tenants are depending on each other to protect each other by not being careless with their keys, this protects everyone's interests
- people request or demand extra and extra-extra keys so they can be lazy about how they care for said keys
- a "deposit" or lost fee of $50 is cheap like free to some people and may just laugh & abuse it, so it's set higher so no one is laughing
- the management cannot charge all the tennants who didn't lose their keys the $15-$20 / key Parry's charges for new keys as they did nothing wrong, so someone has to pay it
- count how many suites (@ 2keys/suite x $20) rekeying the front door costs when someone loses a key the management has to absorb, add a service call, a high-security rekey for every door (pool, laundry, storage, frnt, back, parking, bike lockup, guest area, etc), labour, and keys for maintenance & staff

sorry for the point notes, just how I'm thinking right now.

You can try to copy one, it's just metal after-all, but when you move out and have to turn in your keys, if you dont return the key given to you then you will have to explain where your keys went, and how long ago, and where'd you get the other key you've been using.
If any breakins happened since your key was out of your control and you said nothing, could you be liable retroactively ?

Copying a restricted key may get you kicked out, but not out of your lease.

IDK?

I purchased a Mul-T-Lock deadbolt for our office from Parry Bros. To get keys, the registered owner has to sign for it. They might have their own keyway, but I haven't got enough different interactive keys to verify that that's the case. I got the locks because the locks the landlord had provided left something to be desired. The Interactives can be picked relatively easily, but they're way better than worn Schlage locks that have been mastered.

I don't think it'll be possible to get an official Parry Bros key without a signature. If it only opens the front door and your door, they could just rekey your door, and since the front door is probably maison keyed, they might not have to do anything with that, or add a wafer there.

So likely two doors, and the rest of the system is OK.

I don't see why you need to rekey the place, like you said, you'll never see that key
again anyhow. Just tell your landlord you need a duplicate key for your apartment.
I bet a duplicate costs lots less than $900, he might even have a few left from the
original rekeying job

If he wanted to know what duplicates cost, phone parry and tell them you want a padlock with multlok cylinder for your ________, and how much are the keys.
Ask how much to rekey it if i give the wrong person a key.
His building wont be charged more than this price, and not likely less on small key orders.
Something to know when you go talk to your landlord.

Thank you very much for all of your replies guys! this is great brainstorming...

I did a little more looking around, and sadly i think S&G's outlook is bang on.

It is the cost to rekey everyone's keys, and his reasoning is bang on. yeah, if i might just tell them when i move out since its basically my damage deposit ($600) and then i'd basically not give them the last $300 >_<

le sigh.

its a restricted key than you need to get a signature to be one of the persons to have a key duplicated in order to get one. I didnt realize what a big deal it was >_<. I am not known to be one of the most careful persons out there. might just chuck it off to the "lessons learned" book.

Just an update. and a profound thank you for your insight guys, i do appreciate it.

Funny coincidence, the landlord just re-keyed the locks and gave us all new keys. Someone else must have lost theirs lol. So i got new keys!!

Happy-go-lucky!

Regards and good travels.
