Has anyone ever handled or picked the Abloy style Gerda padlocks? Ones like their S70 ? I cant find much enlish language info. They're part of the Assa group so I expect high quality. But, some UK sites werent very flattering of Gerda in a vague general way.

Is that just anti Polish bias?

From my experience, and I'm from Poland, is that a lot of Polish folks with not much opportunity in Poland go abroad to work, and as in America, these people are seen as "they're takin our jobs!" but the jobs they take are toilet cleaner at mcdonalds and other laborious things that neither Americans or Brits actually want to do, but it sure is easy to single out a group as being the cause of your own troubles when someone here or in the UK may be struggling for work or to make ends meet.

Gerda is an ok lock, and I'm sure their models vary, but I wouldn't say they are of ASSA or Medeco quality, even though it may be owned by Assa Abloy Group. Whichever UK locksmith websites or forums you visited probably had the bias of past experience when Gerda locks were not good, and some anti Polish bias mixed in. Sort of like the American saying of things made in china are cheap, but I bet half the stuff in our house is made in china and we dont complain about our 55 inch TV because it looks great and doesnt feel cheaply made. But then you go to the dollar store and buy a $1 made in china padlock and low and behold it's sorta true, those padlocks are horribly made so yeah, sometimes things made in china are junk, and I guess that's where stereotypes come from, there's always some truth to the story, but unfortunately it ends up getting applied broadly onto a whole nation or an entire peoples.

I have never handled a Gerda padlock so I'm sorry I can't help there.

As for the "not very flattering reputation": I have handled a few other types of Gerda locks and I wasn't impressed with the fit and finish. They did have a rough sort of feel to them so I could see how someone might use that as an excuse to look down on them. However I know that several of their designs are extremely secure despite the sometimes clunky appearance.

If you check out Bosnianbill's videos, you see both ends of the spectrum. I remember one that involved a Gerda mortise cylinder that he was able to rake open very quickly. Yet in another video he was thoroughly "whipped" by a Gerda Titan.

As for Assa Abloy, they own a huge number of individual brands, all with varying quality. Some of them are very high quality while others are more of a budget lock. A FAB is nowhere near as nice as a Ruko even though they are both Assa Abloy brands.

Prejudices are really odd if you're not part of the group which holds it. I have met with thousands of people and had to learn to not inflame theirs and hide mine. It was good experience. Funny thing is, I still have mine and, obviously, the public has their's. For me, though, it is just part of the scenery. I do find the TV news more entertaining these days.

The "security through obscurity " concept meshes well with my experience. The GerdaTytan is interesting. I see it offered for €50 to €90 . The freight looks to be about $40.
