Vintage filing cabinet - replacement key - Yale?

Postby Northern_Spinach » 15 Aug 2017 8:40

We have a vintage filing cabinet which my wife has inadvertently managed to lock, but don't have any keys. I don't want to have to break it open so have been trying to source a replacement key, but one or two key suppliers we have tried seem unable to help. It appears to be a Yale lock with a code KO 14 (or K0 14) on it. Does anyone know where to source a replacement key, or how else we might be able to open the lock without breaking a nice vintage cabinet, please? Any help much appreciated!

Is there a locksmith shop in town? If so they should be able to cut a key using that code (they can look up the code in a book or in a database and cut a key blank accordingly).

Thanks Jacob, but the shops we've tried seem to say they don't recognise this key type and code - hence asking this wider expert audience via this forum. A Google search also doesn't seem to come up with anything for the code KO 14 (or K0 14) for Yale locks.

If anyone else could help, then much appreciated.

Should perhaps also have explained that I'm based in Britain - help from UK-based experts/shops therefore most helpful, or if readers know of any similar UK forums where this could be posted.

There is a bypass that a competent locksmith will know. Ditto, the K series codes are available on InstaCode.

All else failing, a decent locksmith will pick and decode or impression a key easily.

Look at the 300T key in center photo, The Key is used on Tau Italia Gate Operators:

I would pick it, if possible, a paperclip may work better than a pick due to its shape, Good Luck

I hope you are joking--
No way is a full size paracentric key ever gonna fit into that little file cabinet lock
If memory serves an S1041JA is the proper blank for your file cabinet lock

Bill, I have a Y1 key here that someone ground and filed the sh*t out of to fit a padlock that takes a Y52...so with too much time on one's hands, anything is possible!

ROFL! Have done plenty of creative blank modification to get a working blank, too. :D
