Is the circle bit around the key insertion point hardened?

The Abus 88 series is solid brass construction, apart from the shackle
so I would say No
The only lock cylinder I know of that has a hardened key cylinder is a postal lock
I only tried drilling one and I haven't yet forgot

Having problems uploading a photo. Mobile Imgur doesn allow uploads and I cant download the app.

Some locks have a hard shutter, spinner, or a ring around the key cylinder. I was hopefull I was seeing one on the 88.

I am looking for a decoy lock that is less expensive but hard to beat without evidence. I am thinking the 88/50 or American 5200 or A700 (key retaining version) would keep out the casual thief.

A decoy lock that is hard to beat without evidence? The Sargent and Greenleaf 8077 or 8088 can be found cheap on eBay, and they are very hard to beat without evidence. No keys, either. (Except the combination change key).

Cant every combo be figured out? I dont mean like the crappy Master padlocks. Isnt there a method to derive the combo even from safes relately quickly? Based on your other posts, this padlock must be a lot better than I believe it to be. Google to the rescue!

I dislike combos personally. I have some and I always fumble a bit. I have lots of keys. I know where each fits.

My application will sit in the weather in the middle of a pasture. I dont have much faith in a govt filing cabinet lock out in the rain.

Are you talking about the combination dials or the 4-5 wheel communication locks (like a master 175)?

The multi-wheel combo locks have pretty similar decoding methods, but I don't know about the dial form. Never got into that type of manipulation.

The S&G 8088 was used till the early 1980's to secure Nuke's and other munitions then they changed to the 8077.
they are more then just a "gov filing cabinet lock".

I thought they used the Hi Shear and those huge shielded keyed S&G padlocks for that ?

Well, I have never handled one. I saw the zinc case and the usual safe flaws. (forbidden last numbers and adjacent number accuracy) It is a real safe lock but no hard plate or relocker and no ball bearings.

The government did put a lot of faith in it from the 50s to the 70s. (Whatever that was worth) They definately used it on filing cabinet and may have used it in missle control. The only photo I could find of a missle launch control in that time period was of a Titan II. The padlock used was an American square body.
